Experienced Tutor with Master's Degree in Learning Disabilities

I have a master's degree from Montclair State University. In public and private schools, I have taught regular and special education at the elementary level. I am a Wilson Reading System certified teacher and am trained in Orton-Gillingham. In addition, I received the Judy and Josh Weston Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Over the last 15 years, I have tutored students. My students have needed instruction in reading, writing and math from kindergarten through high school levels. My initial training provided me with skills in using manipulatives, concrete materials, to instruct math. I find all students benefit from these methods. Working in public schools, I have had training in enVision math and Everyday Math in recent years.

My teaching began in Montessori. This method is based in phonics for reading. I wanted to develop this further, so I took an Orton-Gillingham course and then Wilson training. These programs are especially helpful with dyslexic students. As a regular education teacher, I was trained in the Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop. I have used these techniques in teaching and tutoring students. I find it is most beneficial when students have the opportunity to choose their own reading material and writing topics.

I am certified NJ Teacher of the Handicapped, Learning Disability-Teacher Consultant, and
NJ K-8. I am a Wilson Reading System Level 1 certified teacher and am trained in Orton-Gillingham, Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing through Lindamood Bell. I also teach executive functioning, beginning with organization.
