About Margaret

I'm a newly minted master of biomedical science, currently in the process of applying for medical school. While I haven't formally taught or tutored, I have deeply enjoyed leading study groups since high school through college and graduate school. I honestly believe that being able to teach is one of the best qualifications for becoming a doctor, because being able to educate a patient is arguably the greatest challenge and most important job a doctor has. As the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and being able to teach patients how to maintain a healthy lifestyle is of the utmost importance. Moreover, patients are often given prescriptions and treatments without much explanation of why they are given, and what explanations they are given they can be difficult for a layperson to understand. By tutoring, I hope to better learn and understand how to communicate and teach difficult material as simply as possible, so that everyone can understand, in the hopes that someday I'll be able to do the same for my future patients.

As of now, I have both a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry (with a minor in nutrition) and a Master's of Biomedical Science, and I have enjoyed countless hours of classes in biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and microbiology. These courses have given me the background to teach a wide variety of life science subjects since I've been a student myself in these subjects, and through both individual and group study sessions I have learned many techniques to learning the material, which I look forward to passing on to my students.

I may be new, but I hope you'll give me a chance to work with you! I look forward to learning and relearning whatever subjects you need help in right alongside you, and make things as easy for you to learn as possible!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I have taken both college level anatomy as well as medical school level gross anatomy as part of my master's program in biomedical sciences.

Biochemistry

As an undergraduate, I received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and took the following biochemistry classes: general biochemistry (2 semesters), experimental biochemistry (2 semesters), problem solving in biochemistry (1 semester), biochemical communications (1 semester), and research problems in biochemistry (2 semesters). As a graduate I also took a medical school level course in biochemistry just this past semester, and now have a Master's in Biomedical Sciences.

Biology

Over the course of high school, college and graduate school, I have taken a wide variety of courses in varying biology subjects. I have taken the SAT biology exam and scored a 720, taken the AP biology exam and received a 5, received a 10 on the biological sciences section of the MCAT, and have taken several semesters of biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, structural biology and cell biology.

Chemistry

I have taken two semesters of general chemistry and chemistry lab, and have additional chemistry experience in the context of organic chemistry, biochemistry and biophysical chemistry. I have also gained additional experience in chemistry in the context of the MCAT and scored a 12 on the physical sciences section.

Clarinet

From fourth through twelfth grade I played clarinet in both the school band and jazz band, and continued to play for personal enjoyment in college. I have also played both soprano and bass clarinet, and helped teach soprano clarinet in high school to some of the beginner students.

Nutrition

As an undergraduate I minored in nutrition and took several classes in nutrition, including a graduate level course in advanced nutrition. I deeply enjoyed the classes, and as part of my introductory course I even gave a teaching presentation to the class. Coupled with a nutritional component in my biochemistry courses, I feel confident that I would be capable of tutoring in nutrition.

Physiology

I have taken college level physiology in high school, studied physiology for the MCAT, and taken two semesters of medical school level physiology as part of my master's in biomedical sciences.

Piano

I took piano lessons for twelve years, from ages 5-17, and played piano in the school jazz band in high school. I also aided in playing piano accompaniments for the school choir, honor society events, and other extracurricular activities that required a pianist.

Voice (Music)

I was in the school choir from fifth through twelfth grade, as well as the chamber choir in sixth through twelfth grade and select choir in ninth through twelfth grade. I was also a member of the NJ All Shore Choir from tenth through twelfth grade and a member of the NJ All State Choir in twelfth grade.
