Hi there! I'm Hannah, a historian, writer, and experienced tutor based in Jersey City. I'm a PhD Candidate in the History Department at Stanford University, where I work on the history of early modern Italy. I have a BA in the History of Science from Harvard University. I began tutoring shortly after graduating from college in 2019, primarily for college essay writing, although I have also supported adults applying to medical and graduate school. I began my PhD in the fall of 2020 (I plan to graduate next June), through which I've had the opportunity to do a great deal of writing as well as teaching at the college level as a teaching assistant, an instructor in my own courses, and a mentor to seniors writing honors theses. I'm also a professional writer, having worked for about 6 years at iHeartmedia, where I oversee the writing team and also write episodes for the narrative-style history podcast "Noble Blood." I am an experienced editor, and my many years now working in and around universities and with college students has given me insight into the admissions process as well as into the "genre" of application writing more generally. I have had students accepted to both public and private universities.

I offer tutoring for college essay writing as well as general writing skills, thesis writing, and proofreading, as well as history tutoring in European history and general history skills such as research and primary source analysis. I look forward to working with you!

Essay Writing

I have tutored students in college and other application essay writing for over 6 years, with students accepted to both private and public universities at the graduate and undergraduate level. I am a PhD candidate in history, which has given me both significant writing experience for public and academic audiences and over 3 years of teaching and mentoring experience at the collegiate level. Through this work, I have supported students through various kinds of academic essay writing. I am also a professional writer and editor through my work on the chart-topping history podcast "Noble Blood," and provide thorough feedback to our team of writers there on both historical accuracy and writing content.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I have supported over 30 students writing college and other application essays for over six years, with students accepted to both private and public universities. I also have personal experience writing personal statements: in addition to my acceptance to Harvard for my undergraduate studies, I was accepted to six PhD programs, including Stanford, Yale, and Penn (ultimately choosing Stanford), and have won grants with personal statements including the Fulbright Grant and the Mabelle McLeod Lewis Dissertation Completion Grant.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have gained over 3 years of public speaking experience through my teaching at Stanford as well as the City College of New York; additionally, I frequently speak at academic conferences as part of my work. I also have a background in performance, having danced, sung, and acted throughout my youth and in college, which has given me insight into ways to manage performance anxiety and connect with audiences.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I have mentored three Stanford undergraduates writing history theses, and will be mentoring two more during the 2025-2026 academic year. My students have all received excellent marks on their theses, with one gaining admission to an MA program at Cambridge University. I myself am also an experienced thesis writer, having received a grade of "summa cum laude" on my own undergraduate thesis at Harvard University; I am currently writing a PhD dissertation in History at Stanford, which has been supported by prestigious grants such as the Fulbright Grant and the Mabelle McLeod Lewis Dissertation Completion Grant.
