My name is Uchechukwu A., and for me, science has never been just a subject to study. It has always been a way of understanding the world. This belief guided my path, from earning a Bachelor of Technology in Microbiology at the Federal University of Technology, Yola, to a Master of Science in Public Health at the University of Lagos. I have pursued further knowledge through certifications in Summary Statistics in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University and Improving Global Health from HarvardX, not just to add credentials, but to deepen my understanding. What I have truly gained is a way of thinking: how to ask the questions that matter and translate complex scientific ideas into language that resonates.
For the past two and a half years, I have worked with secondary students aged 9 to 14 in classrooms and one-on-one settings. At Covenant University Secondary School, I designed lesson plans that mirrored science in everyday life, created assessments that rewarded genuine understanding over memorization, and guided students through lab sessions where abstract ideas became tangible. During a public health internship, I worked with teenage girls on menstrual hygiene education, and by creating space for honest conversation, I witnessed how transformative learning becomes when students feel safe enough to ask the questions they were always too afraid to ask. True learning begins with trust.
What I have learned in the lab has made me a better teacher. My work monitoring water quality, conducting field research for USAID-funded projects, and analyzing data that impacted real communities stays with me whenever I sit with a struggling student. I adapt to each student's pace, find new ways in when an explanation is not landing, and stay invested in their growth long after our session ends. Science changed the way I see the world, and I walk into every lesson hoping to offer that same shift to the students I tutor.
