Welcome! I'm Mary: an English professor, wife, mom of two, and fitness enthusiast.

For the past five years, I have served as an Assistant Professor of English at Brookdale Community College. In this role, I've taught first-year composition and foundational studies courses to students from many backgrounds and age groups. My teaching philosophy is centered on empowering students to discover who they are and what they value through their writing. I believe in creating a supportive classroom environment where students find joy in the writing process, while also discovering what they're passionate about.

My experience began long before I became a professor. My education began at Brookdale, where I earned my A.A. degree in English. I then earned my B.A. in English from Seton Hall University and my M.A. in Rhetoric & Composition from Monmouth University. In 2017, I became a Writing Center tutor at Seton Hall, Monmouth, and Brookdale; then, I became an adjunct instructor in 2018 before becoming a tenure-track professor in 2020. My early experiences provided me with a deep understanding of the individual challenges students face with writing, from brainstorming and outlining to refining arguments and mastering grammar. My experience as a professor has allowed me to gain valuable hands-on experience in course design, assessment, and classroom management. This comprehensive background has given me a unique perspective on the entire student writing journey, from the initial struggles to the ultimate triumphs. I am passionate about sharing this knowledge and helping students achieve their academic and personal goals.

I can help with any aspect of the writing process, including idea generation, outlining, research, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading. I can also help you understand how to navigate AI as a writer so you know when and how to use it as a partner in your projects.

Don't hesitate to reach out with any inquiries or concerns; I would love to work with you!

I have been an Assistant Professor of English for five years, and was an adjunct instructor previously. In both of those roles, I have primarily taught first-year writing courses. Additionally, I have 5 years of Writing Center tutoring experience, during which I have worked one-on-one with diverse college-level students. The writing process is where I shine: I would love to work on your writing with you, from idea generation to drafting and revising!
