About Maggie

If you are eager to express yourself in English with fluency, accuracy, clarity, and confidence, I would love to help you. Mastering the English language is tough, but it can also be great fun. Time spent together working towards achievement of your English language goals will be a sound investment in your personal, academic, and professional success.

What are my qualifications? I hold a Master's degree in Adult Education with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) and have over fifteen years of instructional and administrative/advisory experience in the field. Working in private language schools and in a university setting, I have taught and advised students from all over the globe, from a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds.

My greatest strength is my commitment to personalized teaching methods and study practices that ensure continuous progress outside the time we spend together. Mastering English requires you to live the language -- a very challenging task if you, like many, are stuck in a translation rut. Assisting students in achieving native-like fluency is my specialty. Together we will break tired old study habits that have, thus far, prevented achievement of your full potential.

When you initially contact me via e-mail, I will respond with a series of questions designed to give me a sense of your English language background, present challenges, and concrete goals for our tutoring sessions. Together we will determine the most appropriate method of instruction (in-person, telephone, on-line) and the resources to be utilized for the achievement of your goals (websites, textbooks, movies, magazines, podcasts, etc.) Sessions will be tailored to your personal interests so to ensure that your English study experience is enjoyable and compatible with your lifestyle. Your English language skills will improve 100 times faster if the improvement plan is pleasurable. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your goals.

Note: Remote proofreading assistance available. Rate negotiable.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

IELTS

I have assisted students from numerous countries prepare for both the TOEFL and the IELTS. While assisting students with preparation for both exams is rewarding, I have a greater affinity for the IELTS because it is a more accurate assessment of one's English abilities and a more accurate indicator of future success in an English speaking classroom. I have found this to be true not only as an instructor, but as a college administrator working with prospective and newly admitted university students. The structure/design of the IELTS more accurately assesses listening, speaking, and reading skills by requiring comprehension rather than educated guesswork. IELTS writing tasks and responses are not formulaic, as they are on the TOEFL - meaning it is not possible for students to produce memorized responses. I would welcome the opportunity to help students perform to their maximum ability on the IELTS.

TOEFL

Having assisted students from all over the world prepare for both the TOEFL and the IELTS, I appreciate the importance students place on achievement of a certain score, an admissions benchmark for a school of choice. As a former college administrator, I also appreciate that standardized test scores do not always accurately measure a student's English language abilities. Sometimes the score is simply an indication of test-taking skills. When preparing a student for success on a standardized test, I am obligated to simultaneously prepare him or her for success in the English-speaking classroom, post-admission. As your TOEFL tutor, I will push you to perform to your maximum ability, both in your usage of English on the test itself and in your everyday life. Achievement of a high TOEFL score means nothing if you are unprepared for the rigors of study in an English speaking university setting. Together we will work towards success on TOEFL and beyond.
