About Maggie

If you are eager to express yourself in English with fluency, accuracy, clarity, and confidence, I would love to help you. Mastering the English language is tough, but it can also be great fun. Time spent together working towards achievement of your English language goals will be a sound investment in your personal, academic, and professional success.

What are my qualifications? I hold a Master's degree in Adult Education with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) and have over fifteen years of instructional and administrative/advisory experience in the field. Working in private language schools and in a university setting, I have taught and advised students from all over the globe, from a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds.

My greatest strength is my commitment to personalized teaching methods and study practices that ensure continuous progress outside the time we spend together. Mastering English requires you to live the language -- a very challenging task if you, like many, are stuck in a translation rut. Assisting students in achieving native-like fluency is my specialty. Together we will break tired old study habits that have, thus far, prevented achievement of your full potential.

When you initially contact me via e-mail, I will respond with a series of questions designed to give me a sense of your English language background, present challenges, and concrete goals for our tutoring sessions. Together we will determine the most appropriate method of instruction (in-person, telephone, on-line) and the resources to be utilized for the achievement of your goals (websites, textbooks, movies, magazines, podcasts, etc.) Sessions will be tailored to your personal interests so to ensure that your English study experience is enjoyable and compatible with your lifestyle. Your English language skills will improve much more rapidly if the improvement plan is pleasurable.

If finding time to work on your English is difficult, consider online tutoring sessions. I would be happy to meet you via the Wyzant online platform for a 30 minute trial session (no charge) to learn more about you and your current challenges and needs. Together, we can discuss how online sessions might be structured within your schedule - giving you a cost and time-efficient way to meet your English language goals.

Note: Conversation practice, accent reduction, proofreading, and editing assistance available. Hourly rate negotiable.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I hold a Masters degree in Adult Education with a specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language. As both a classroom instructor and a university administrator, I have worked with non-native English speaking students from all parts of the globe. Areas of concentration as a private tutor include vocabulary expansion, accent reduction, proof-reading, and editing.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a Master's degree in Adult Education with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) and have over fifteen years of instructional and administrative/advisory experience in the field. Working in private language schools and in a university setting, I have taught and advised students from all over the globe, from a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds. Whether you seek vocabulary expansion, accent reduction, improved grammatical accuracy or increased fluency in speaking and writing, I can help.

Grammar

As an ESL instructor, I have experience teaching grammar points using both direct and indirect methods. I understand students' desire to find a formula for accurate English production, as well as the need for them to develop an intuitive sense of the language. Letting go of native language interference is quite challenging. Grammar topics may need to be approached from multiple angles before a dramatic "A-ha!" moment or a gradual acceptance of a structure occurs. I have the patience and experience to get you there.

IELTS

As an ESL instructor at Language Studies International, I taught both IELTS and TOEFL preparation classes. Practice tests were administered periodically and student scores improved steadily over the course of study. Student evaluations noted my clear explanations of grammar points and helpful strategies for achieving success on the listening and speaking portions of the exams.

Proofreading

As an experienced instructor of English as a Second Language, I am well-familiar with writing errors related to spelling, grammar, word choice, syntax, and overall organization of ideas. All of these areas can be problematic for native English speakers too. If hired to complete a proof-reading assignment, I will go beyond examination of individual words and sentences and provide feedback on the content and organization of your writing. If needed or desired, I will review multiple drafts and schedule time to discuss the assignment by phone or via the Online Platform.

TOEFL

As an ESL instructor at Language Studies International, I taught both IELTS and TOEFL preparation classes. Practice tests were administered periodically and student scores improved steadily over the course of study. Student feedback forms noted my clear explanations of grammar points and helpful strategies for achieving success on the listening and speaking portions of the exams.

Vocabulary

As a speaker of English as a Second Language you may sometimes feel frustration that you are unable to find the English words to express exactly what you want to say. People understand you but the nuance of meaning you want to convey just isn't coming across. I can help. I have many years of experience helping students grow their vocabulary and master commonly used idiomatic expressions. A robust vocabulary is an important component of self-expression -- in the workplace, in school, and in the company of family and friends. Don't let a limited vocabulary prevent your voice from being heard.

Writing

I am an instructor of English as a Second Language with a masters degree in Adult Education with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) and years of classroom teaching experience. I can help non-native English speaking adults refine their writing skills with attention to grammar, sentence structure, organization of ideas, vocabulary expansion, and proper syntax.

Great Tutor

I contacted Maggie because I needed someone to help me review my post graduate studies personal statement. Maggie went above and beyond expectations. My first draft didn't have good flow, so Maggie suggested I structure the paper in a different way...and it made all the difference. The final draft was clear, concise, and professional. I felt very comfortable submitting my "new and improved" person
