Accuplacer

Accuplacer

I have worked in higher education for several years, serving in various areas of student affairs, including academic support through math tutoring and adult education instruction. As a former college student, I have taken the Accuplacer entrance exam, with a strong focus on the math section, which is my area of strength. I can draw upon my knowledge of Algebra 1, 2, Geometry, and Precalculus courses from high school to help prepare students for the entrance exam. Reviewing score requirements from various community colleges in New Jersey can further clarify what students need to achieve. Additionally, analyzing the score breakdown will help determine whether a student places into remedial or non-remedial math courses.
ACT Math

ACT Math

The concept of ACT Math is targeted at Algebra 2 material from linear functions, quadratics, rationals, trigonometry, and much more. Problem-solving skills are essential in trigonometry and quadratics, such as determining the angle of elevation to depreciation, and finding the tangent using the SOHCAHTOA method. We use visuals, graphs, and diagrams to solve word problems. Underlying key concepts, phrases, and operators are essential skills for passing the ACT Math exam. ACT Math is similar to the Accuplacer Placement Exam, where skills are tested to obtain a proficient score, which can then be used as a substitute for the college entrance exam.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is an introductory course typically taken during a student's freshman year of high school. I have expertise in a wide range of topics covered in this course, including radicals, quadratic functions, solving equations using the quadratic formula, and many other foundational concepts. The skills and knowledge gained from middle school algebra serve as a stepping stone, building a strong foundation for success in Algebra 1.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I tutor Algebra 1 and 2 from linear functions, exponential, quadratic, radicals, and rationals at the basic, intermediate, and advanced levels.
Calculus

Calculus

To take Calculus, students must master strong skills in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Trigonometry from prior courses to complete Calculus. For example, when we work with functions from algebra, we take f(x) to f ' (x), which is the differentiation of a function. However, we must then simplify the derivative as much as possible, utilizing techniques such as factoring, like denominators, like terms, the distributive property, and algebraic skills, to master Calculus. Applications of Differentiation require first and second derivative tests. Still, we take the derivative to set it equal to zero to find critical numbers, which in turn require factoring or the use of quadratic formulas from Algebra 2. Then we plug them back into the original function. Calculus requires many algebra skills so students need to ensure that their foundation is strong before taking the course. I provide detailed steps and will review foundations of algebra if necessary with students in order to see them succeed in Calculus.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have worked in higher education for several years, serving in various areas of student affairs, including academic support through math tutoring, test proctoring, adult education instruction, and financial aid counseling. For example, as a math tutor and high school equivalency instructor in Adult Education, I supported students ranging from traditional college-age to adult learners, helping them build proficiency in math from Pre-Algebra through Calculus. I also taught test-taking strategies to prepare students to successfully complete their high school equivalency exams or related coursework. In my role as a Financial Aid counselor, I guided students through the process of filing financial aid applications and provided detailed explanations of eligibility requirements and the order of disbursement for both state and federal aid programs.
Cooking

Cooking

I have experience working with my family in the food industry, where I gained a strong understanding of food preparation- cold dishes to hot meals. Cooking is also a personal passion of mine, and I enjoy sharing that passion with others by teaching them how to prepare specific dishes and create meals for their families. While cooking can sometimes require extensive preparation, especially when cooking for larger families, it can be approached at any level, from basic to advanced. I enjoy preparing a variety of cuisines, including Italian favorites like pasta and pizza, as well as dishes like Thai-style chicken tenders, which can be made quickly and easily. I would love the opportunity to teach others how to cook using recipes I have refined over the years. Thank you for taking the time to review my experience.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I have tutored students in the truth tables, probability, sets, and many other forms of logic at my local community college. Some devices I use help the students prepare for there exams. For example, I made a flowchart to breakdown truth table values for students to memorize to organize the logic in a concise format. This helped students become more confident with truth tables for their logic class. This logic class I taught myself just by looking and practicing problems in the textbook. A college math class with no numbers and mostly words is a challenge, but logic and math are correlated into one another.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Elementary Math is based on the numbers, operations, logic, analysis, fractions, decimals etc as students from Pre-K to 5th grade start developing math skills for further skills in Algebra when they arrive at Middle School. For example, I have worked with 5th graders on the foundations of fractions, such as finding denominators or lining up place values with the decimals as it provides students a sense of Math foundation as they prepare for Algebra. Most of the elementary students I have worked with were in-person and virtual, in different grades, where we see in the curriculum how they are learning to build problem-solving skills. Elementary Math can be composed of 6th grade as well with the beginnings of One Step Equations in order to solve for the variable x as well. Elementary Math is a pleasure to work with students on to see them build skills to succeed and further excel their learning.
GED

GED

Students who dropped out of high school due to unforeseen circumstances or educational issues can always return to take the High School Equivalency Exam (GED). The GED Math exam for example, consists of Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Precalculus material to forthcoming a student learning to succeed. As a former GED instructor at Brookdale Community College, I utilize shortcuts and steps to effectively use the TI-30 calculator, as well as key words and phrases for interpretation, so that students can succeed on the GED Math and Science parts. English and History compose of spelling, essay writing, proofreading, and many other skills. Students can utilize the GED to secure a better job, further excel in college education, or meet a requirement for a future task in their lives. I am always here to assist students to prepare for the GED exam in order to see them succeed for their future.
Geometry

Geometry

To succeed in Geometry, you need a solid foundation of basic math, arithmetic, and algebra as well as knowing your different shapes. In Geometry, I utilize protractors to measure angles and draw shapes so students can find missing side length or angle. Some early stages of trigonometry, such as the SOHCAHTOA of triangles, come into play with algebra when cross-multiplying is involved or when converting between radians and degree mode on a calculator. Students are required to review a set of formulas for different shapes such as Perimeter, Area, Volume, and Surface Area. Volume and Surface Area is acquired with 3D Shapes such as Spheres, Cylinders, Prisms, and Pyramids to name a few. I utilize formulas and geometric proofs in order to assist students understand the logic of how shapes are equivalent or congruent as well.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I have been tutoring students on the Wyzant platform for Mathematics for almost 5 to 7 years, and homeschooled students to learn similar topics from the classroom, even if they are utilizing a different curriculum. Students who are homeschooled learn many different subjects from home if they are learning remotely full-time or temporarily due to an injury or illness. I would be happy to help anyone being homeschooled in Mathematics to further excel in their education at home. Thank you for reviewing.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have tutored Linear Algebra as a community college Math Tutor for the last year and a half. For example, I covered the topics of matrices, vectors, and concepts with Calculus that are used in this course. This course focuses on looking at 3D space using matrix operations to solve problems.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

To succeed in Pre-Algebra, students need a foundation of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, vocabulary, mental math, and problem solving skills. I work with Elementary math students in Pre-K to 5th grade to prepare them for Pre-Algebra in middle school. Students learn how to line up decimal points to like denominators on fractions and one-step equations, isolating the variable. All these different skills are strengthened through problem-solving, enabling the student to think critically, identify key words and concepts, and set up an equation to solve, thereby computing an answer with a provided label. The majority of the students I work with in Pre-Algebra range from those with remedial math skills through those who are in college. The goal is for me to build Pre-Algebra skills for future success in Precalculus or a more intermediate Algebra course.
Precalculus

Precalculus

A solid foundation in Algebra and Geometry will be necessary in order to complete Precalculus as we explore the different functions and their graphs to generate thinking and understanding what domain, range, intercepts, and asymptotes are. We utilize the Unit Circle and Trigonometry as one new topic that can sometimes be seen in Algebra 2 courses. I teach students to memorize quadrants of one of the unit circles; then they can utilize all coterminal points and signs to know the other quadrants. Exponent rules for exponential, factoring for quadratics, slope intercept form for linear and SOHCAHTOA in Trigonometry are some algebra skills we utilize in Precalculus to build a stronger foundation. After exploring the material, the students have a strong background for Calculus courses.
Statistics

Statistics

I taught myself Statistics using a textbook from my old community college. I work with topics such as frequency tables, histograms, probability, confidence intervals, normal and t distributions, and many other topics. Statistics is all about understanding the logical perspectives, which is important to this course.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

In my teachings of Trigonometry, I utilized former Algebra and Geometry skills, such as SOHCAHTOA of right triangles, in order to explore Trigonometry further, along with the inverses of Sine, cosine, and tangent. The inverses are cosecant, secant, and cotangent, which we must now examine in conjunction with all six trigonometric functions, their identities, and how to solve equations involving them. I work with students who just need to know how to use identities vs memorize them. However, honors students must memorize this material to challenge themselves, depending on the course. Students excel in Trigonometry when I break down each step and algebraic skill, enabling them to complete a Trigonometry course successfully in high school or college.

Courteous, responsive and intelligent math tutor for my 5th grader

Matthew B has changed my opinion about the effectiveness of online tutoring. In fact, in just two sessions, my once disinterested or unfocused daughter ( 5th grade-Singapore Math) says she "feels more prepared" for in class activities. Her speed has also increased dramatically when doing the homework assignments. I hope to continue working with Matthew B. at minimum once or twice a week moving forward with goals to improve her comprehension and help with assignments/testing.
