I am an experienced teacher and tutor who has worked with students at all levels for ten years. Plus, I am skilled at identifying and addressing other issues that interfere with understanding (such as fear or misunderstanding of basic skills).

My credentials: I hold New York state certification in Chemistry and English. At present I teach test preparation and tutor while I work on a book. In the past, I have taught middle school science, high school English, and elementary math and test-based preparation for the SAT, SSAT, ISEE in English and math. My main background is in English, but I started college in engineering school.

Also I'm a published writer and have been thanked for my contributions to three award-winning books.

My results: Most recently, a student I worked with credited me with helping her get a 98 on the English Regents.

Another student I tutored over the summer raised his English Regents score from a 59 (failing) to a 79, easily passing.

Another student over the course of a year went from failing math to getting an A-.

Two of my elementary students this year got 4s in math and 3.8 in ELA.

I am the coordinator of religious education at Notre Dame church and have taken two year-long ecumenical courses in Old Testament and New Testament as well as an intense semester-long course in Old Testament through Catholic Bible School. I have also taken the required coursework in Old and New Testament required of Catholic Cathechists in the Archdiocese of New York.

I teach test-prep oriented math and reading comprehension to students on Saturdays to students from 3rd grade through high school. For a year I worked at a charter school working with 3rd to 5th graders in remedial math. I have certification pending in elementary (I am missing two courses, one in geography, one in pedagogy). On Sundays I teach religious education to 3rd and 4th grade students.
ISEE

I have worked with a number of students preparing for the ISEE test on the lower, middle and elementary levels. In supporting my students I used the official ISEE prep book as well as other resources. We worked on math skills (both quantitative reasoning and mathematics achievement) reading comprehension and vocabulary. Throughout we worked on strategies for the test, working from each student's strengths. With each student, I worked on the essay, including practicing essay topics to develop fluency, organizing each topic, and checking for common grammar and spelling errors. I hold New York state certification in Chemistry and English.

I have given presentations to large and small groups including at a national conference about how my program used a College Board program in an after school program. For five years I managed a monthly professional development program for Scoutmasters at the Manhattan Boy Scout district, which entailed monthly presentations as well as work with Scoutmasters and others on public speaking.

I have prepared students for the English and Global regents at several high schools in a Saturday program. As a high school and middle school teacher, I have used the regents exams in each subject area (Earth Science, Chemistry, Algebra) as a guide for test questions and class preparation. The Regents are specific to individual subjects so I believe I am prepared in the ones listed above. Regents tests are offered in other subjects as well.

I am published writer (fiction and nonfiction) and am certified in teaching English. In the past I've worked with students in writing from the elementary through SAT level. In 2011 I scored the New York State Test for grades 3-5 in English and math.

Beth is the most wonderful tutor we've ever encountered.

Beth is an absolute angel to our family. Her patience and empathy with our situation with our 13 year old newly adopted son from Haiti is an absolute blessing. She is so passionate about teaching and reading while making it fun. She has only been working two weeks with our son but we can already see the vast improvement in our son's understanding.
