Hi! I'm Mary Kate (MK for short). I graduated summa cum laude from Georgian Court University and am currently enrolled in the English Graduate program at Rutgers University. I am a firm believer that the way in which a subject is taught holds more importance than the curriculum itself. As a student, I connected more with the subjects taught by teachers that had a genuine interest in what they were teaching and, more importantly, had an interest in my general well being. I pride myself on my ability to take a subject that might seem daunting and break it down so that a student is able to conquer it in his or her own way. Each student is different and I believe that it is important to take individual learning styles and interests into account. Most importantly, I believe that creating a safe and comfortable environment fosters a student's development.
I have two years teaching experience at the high school level. During my first year teaching, I was the school's Title I English teacher. This position allowed me to push into a variety of English classes from grades 9-12 and help students who were struggling with the material being taught within the class. These students also met with me once a week in my own classroom, where I taught reading and writing skills that they could use during their classes or at home when completing homework or projects. My second year of teaching involved teaching primarily junior English classes and English/Special Education classes. The junior curriculum focused primarily on British Literature and research papers, both of which are my forte. I learned how to use a variety of techniques to teach both writing and reading, many of which used technology and required a hands on approach.
I strive to help all students to the best of my ability with reading and writing. I am extremely easy to get in contact with and always provide a fast response. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
