I hold a Master of Science in Statistics with Distinction and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, with a minor in Statistics and Economics, from the University of the West Indies. I also have a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems and Management from the University of London and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Mathematics) with Distinction. My qualifications were earned outside the United States.
I have taught mathematics to secondary school students ages 11 to 18 in a classroom setting in Trinidad and Tobago for more than two decades. In that time I planned lessons, assessed student progress, and adjusted my teaching to close the gaps I found. I have also tutored privately, both one-on-one and in small groups, and I have helped remedial students who struggled with math. I served as a peer reviewer and mathematics content creator for the Ministry of Education, and my graduate research in statistics included leading the analysis of hospital data and publishing the results as first author.
My approach is to start with what the student already understands and explain ideas in plain language. I like to create fun examples and games that make math feel less intimidating, then build up through worked examples before moving on to practice. I focus on understanding the reasoning rather than memorizing steps, so students can apply it to new problems. I enjoy tutoring algebra, geometry, and statistics, and I especially like helping students who feel anxious about math gain confidence.
