I have experience tutoring students through ENGin where I taught basic English to Ukrainian students online. I think this experience taught me that teaching is not about what I want the students to do but to teach them in a way that works for them. I am an advocate of the Socratic way of learning because I start with a preliminary test where I see what topics they already know and when I’m teaching them the concepts I ask them a lot of questions so they easily retain the information. I do not spoon feed them information and hammer them with hard quizzes because they will not retain any real information, so I ask them questions and if they are unable to answer I give logical reasons that will help them connect the concepts together. I have been teaching math even to the peers in my advanced math classes in college and I make sure I push them to solve the problem first rather than just showing them how to do it.
I can help students understand concepts in science or give them practice to strengthen their knowledge or helping them prepare for standardized tests. I want to make sure they enjoy and understand learning math and science instead of memorizing information and forgetting right after.
