Heya! I’m Alan, and I am a social studies teacher with 15 years of experience. I graduated cum laude from American University as a double major in secondary education and history. I have been living the dream ever since having taught in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Newark, New Jersey. I have had the privilege of teaching social studies to students from 8th to 12th grade from all walks of life, and I have taught inclusion, general education, honors, and AP courses. I was teacher of the year at my high school for the 2018-2019 school year. I have also had the privilege of mentoring three of my colleagues and three student teachers.

I take great joy in teaching (and learning) new and interesting things. My expertise is teaching anything social studies related. The courses I have taught the most are US History, African American History, Debate, Latin American History, and World History. In terms of skills, I have taught students to memorize information, to read complex texts, to write argumentative pieces, to research topics, and to prepare and deliver public speeches. I love supporting people to learn how to do things on their own. My style of teaching is to try to hook people into why something matters, explain the content/skill required, practice the content/skill with the students, and then create an interesting challenge for them to demonstrate that they have mastered the content/skill.

Please do not hesitate to reach out, and I can’t wait to help!
