Hello, my name is Jamie! I’ve been a Special Education High School Teacher and a private tutor for over 12 years. I love tutoring because it allows me to work with students in a one-on-one setting, so lessons can be individualized and I can see growth in students.

I often work with students who have anxieties around math, test-taking, or school in general. My patience, positive attitude, and ability to form connections with students allows students to feel comfortable with me and helps them gain confidence in their skills. I work with students who have learning disabilities, executive functioning weaknesses, or difficulties following through to complete homework, write papers, or make up missing work. I especially enjoy tutoring math: Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, basic math skills, and Geometry. I also have training to help struggling readers, so I tutor Reading with an emphasis on phonics and decoding, using a structured, multi-sensory approach! Lastly, I take special interest in working with English Language Learners and have some Spanish knowledge.

Educational Background: I have a bachelor’s degree in History from The College of New Jersey in 2012, where I was a Special Education and History double major and graduated magna cum laude. I earned a Master’s of Arts in Teaching Special Education from TCNJ in 2013, where I specialized in language and reading disabilities. After teaching for several years, I earned my 2nd Master’s of Arts in Educational Leadership from Ramapo College of NJ in 2017. I have several teaching certifications, including Middle School Mathematics, History, Special Education, and Elementary Education. I have the coursework and training required to become a Reading Specialist. My certifications enable me to serve as a teacher in both general education and special education classes for a variety of high school subjects: Math, English, History, Reading, and Study Skills.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you to help your student be successful!

Engaging Tutor

Jamie has been working with my 2 students for about 2 months now. It has been hard to find someone both of them connect with, but Jamie has been excellent and they both enjoy their time working with her. She is able to connect with them and keep their attention during their lessons. The program she uses is perfectly structured to make sure struggling readers are getting practice with all the skills and concepts they need to grow and become confident readers. I highly recommend Jamie for struggling readers at any age or ability level.

Rockstar tutor that helped us through uncertain times!!

Jamie helped my 16 year old sister Maggie with Geometry and Chemistry! Maggie was unsure if she would even pass the 10th grade in time for fall 2024. But we found Jamie who was so KIND, PATIENT and HELPFUL! We literally couldn't have done this without her! She would even play some games with Maggie to break up the long hours they spent working. I highly recommend Jamie as a tutor and we will definitely be reaching out in the future if we have any tutoring needs!! We love you Jamie!

Above and beyond my expectations!

Jamie went above and beyond my expectations of an online tutoring session! The night before, she offered a crash course on the online website to be used (Wyzant). She put in extra time to explain things to my son and me, to be ready the next day. We focused on math problems, which are the hardest for my ADHD-diagnosed second grader to interpret, translate into math equations, and show the work. Initially there were many moments of distractions, as you would expect (drawing on the whiteboard, writing when he wasn’t asked to do so, etc). But Jamie carefully implemented her skills and tools to redirect him to the task at hand. She mixed work with drawing games to keep the interest going, whenever a problem was solved or a break was needed. Over time, things got better as my son began to follow the ground rules and embraced a quick break for a fun drawing game. Jamie followed school math problems with similar ones she came up with on the spot, giving my son a chance to participate in formulating the new problem (using his and her name, providing the numbers which they would work with). She also showed him how to break down the numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens, and units to the make the problem easier to solve. The idea was to go over the reasoning process over and over until it became second nature. To put the results in perspective, the first exercise took 45 minutes to get through. The last one took 5 minutes. Worth mentioning is that later, after the session, it was time for me to help my kid with the rest of the weekend homework. To my surprise, there was very little of the usual resistance from him. We did 3 math sheets and 3 vocabulary exercises in record time! My son showed eagerness to work with Jamie on Friday, then on Saturday, and again on Sunday, either by asking what time he would work with her or saying “See you tomorrow!”. Highly recommended. Thank you Jamie!
