I have worked in education all of my life, always in ways that look at education differently than the standard school and classroom model. I am an experienced tutor who works with students of all ages. The majority of my time has been spent working with middle and high school students on both general skills and test preparation for state testing and the SAT and ACT. I work with with ESL (English as a Second Language) and other students with international backgrounds that have had their language skills improved, while also learning other material and studying for tests like the TOEFL exam.
I have also worked at summer camps, including one for children with developmental disabilities, such as ADD and Autism, and I've tutored children with similar behavioral problems in public district and charter schools in the Boston neighborhoods of Roxbury and Dorchester.
Along with tutoring, I developed curriculum and served as a program coordinator for Tutors For All, an education non-profit in Boston. Our programs had direct, noticeable effect on the test scores of our students on the MCAS, the Massachusetts state testing for high school students.
As program coordinator I was responsible for the supervision and management, and helped to professionally develop, groups of college students tutoring one-on-one with students in these schools. I have also worked as an intern in the front office of Codman Academy, a charter school in Dorchester.
Currently I am tutoring privately and teach regularly in the Fall and Spring for Educational Services Center, an organization that provides SAT/ACT prep classes. I work with groups all around the area, from Scotch Plains to Summit to Kenilworth. I also have students I work with through state-funded non-profits in New Jersey, such as FACT of Union County. These students are referred through social services, and often have circumstances and/or behavioral issues in their lives that make learning difficult. With all of my students there is definite improvement in their critical thinking, organization, knowledge of crucial material, and reading and writing skills.
I believe that one-on-one tutoring is the most effective way to make 'learning' happen. Working directly with a student allows their needs to be met exactly, making concepts clear that may have been confusing for weeks in school. However I work with students, whether as a 'homework tutor', working on test preparation material, or in any another capacity, I always tailor the learning process individually to each student. Progress is made on specific learning goals at a noticeable rate that will be made clear by improved performance on homework, classwork, tests and quizzes, and also holistically to the student as an individual. Kevin was promoted and ready, taught not just the math but strategies to handle problem. My son was looking forward to his next session.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked for several years with Tutors For All, a non-profit in Boston, that works in public charter and district schools to provide one-on-one tutoring. While there, in addition to working with the students, I developed curricula for 1st-6th graders for two different programs. I also currently work with Home Educational Services and FACT of Union County with students with behavioral difficulties, including two first graders and a fourth grader in the last six months.
