Hello, my name is Ephraim. My Diagnostic and Targeted Approach: Prior to our first session, students take a diagnostic pretest. In our first lesson, we review it together to precisely assess strengths and weaknesses. My subsequent sessions are highly targeted. I do not waste time practicing concepts your student already understands. Instead, we isolate and drill their specific weak points.

Forgetting Unhelpful Tendencies: I teach students to move away from answering questions based on what 'sounds right'—an initially understandable but ultimately unsustainable approach to standardized tests. For example, on SAT Writing questions concerning comma placement, students often guess based on where they take a natural pause. I teach them the exact grammatical rules and conventions governing punctuation, giving them the tools for consistent success.

Mastering Difficult Passages: For the reading portion of the exam, I encourage students to articulate their thinking process out loud so we can identify logical gaps. If a student struggles with a specific genre—such as 19th-century literary fiction—I will curate custom question sets containing only those passages until they achieve total mastery.

I help students to prepare for college entrance exams and standardized tests, craft college essays, review for school exams, and write and revise history and English papers. I also taught note-taking strategies, memorization techniques, writing skills, and reading comprehension strategies to both middle and high school students. During my tenure as a tutor, I have helped students to become critical readers of their own writing. Quite often, many students will already have an instinct for critical reading. They will point out a sentence, a paragraph, or an entire section and remark that it is unclear, unfocused, out of place, unrelated to their main point or just does not sound right. Others will need to read out loud to themselves in order to articulate a criticism. Whenever this happens, I make sure to point out that reading the work out loud is the first step on the road to effective revision. Choppy, dense, wordy, incoherent, and imprecise are just some of the descriptors that we use to pinpoint how a piece of writing is impacting the auditory processing center in our brains. Often, what will cause us to abandon a book, journal article, or essay is not the content itself but, rather, the manner in which it is presented by the author. Unfortunately, when this happens, we often blame ourselves for not being sophisticated or skilled enough to slog through what actually is an unjustifiably indecipherable piece of writing. Thus, on the initial step of recognition, instilling confidence is key because the ability is usually there. Essay Writing and SAT Verbal Help from Patient and Experienced Tutor

Ephraim was very helpful in helping me craft my essay for To Kill a Mockingbird, specifically how to properly use paraphrasing and direct quotes in my evidence. This was something I never considered and the improvement in my essay was noticeable right away. He also had me reread my own writing, which allowed me to better write with the voice that I wanted to write with. In addition to the writing help, Ephraim also was knowledgeable with the SAT Verbal section. I needed help with the use of modifiers, independent and dependent clauses, and the proper use of colons and semi-colons. He patiently reviewed practice problems with me and was able to find out where I was misunderstanding the concepts. I would highly recommend his tutoring help to any student struggling with reading, writing, or the SAT Verbal section. He also has a good sense of humor!
