Hello! I am an English Professor specializing in writing, rhetoric and composition, and literature. I work at a university in New Jersey, where I also teach in the Philosophy Department. I have a PhD in Modernism and Critical Theory. My BA is in English and Philosophy. I've been teaching in college classrooms for over a decade. For the English Department, I teach literature and also college-level writing. In my writing classes we focus on essay structure--from the level of the sentence to the structure of a body paragraph to the shape of the essay overall. In advanced writing classes, we also also work on research and argumentation. I teach students how to find and incorporate evidence as well as how to build a debatable argument. In my philosophy classes we focus on the ethics of power and politics.
When I tutor, I work with both high school and college students, and sometimes middle school students. We usually focus on developing essay writing skills--from body paragraph structure to argumentation. I help prepare students for both AP Language and Composition and AP Literature and Composition Exams. (I am a reader for the AP Language and Composition Exam.) Sometimes students ask me to go over their school assignments with them; sometimes we read books together that we know the student will read later in the school year; sometimes students work with me on new material.
I am happy to help college students with brainstorming or revisions for college essays.
