About Gladys

Following a career as a computer and aerospace engineer, and inspired by some on-the-job mentoring opportunities, and some informal tutoring assignments, I have decided that I would like to develop a second career as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Educator. As a first step, I would like to develop a mathematics tutoring practice.

At work, I was often called upon to train and lead technical teams. For example, I trained a group of aerospace engineers to use a software test facility. This enabled them to check out the prototype code before taking it into the full up integration test facility. As a mathematics graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, I taught PreCalculus for the Social Sciences and Business and was gratified to watch many of my students master the material and gain entrance into the competitive professional schools. In more recent years, I have informally tutored the sons and daughters of friends in high school math subjects.
I enjoy teaching and tutoring because I enjoy my subject and want others to master it as needed for their own enjoyment or as a stepping stone towards a career objective.

During my career as an aerospace engineer, where I focused on solutions to mathematical problems in navigation, guidance, and flight planning, I was required to exercise skills in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry. PreCalculus, and Calculus. As a computer engineer and as an aerospace engineer, I frequently had to think about Finite Math, because a computer is a finite machine, capable of representing numbers in a machine dependent representation. While one could never develop an exact solution, one could guarantee a solution that was accurate to within some given error.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a Masters degree in Mathematics and am knowledgeable in all high school and first and second year college math subjects. I have experience tutoring Algebra I and II.

Algebra 2

I have a Master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin. While a graduate assistant, I taught Mathematics to undergraduates. In my second career as an aeronautical engineer, I used Algebra 2 to solve and graph equations and to perform units conversions at work. I also have experience tutoring Algebra 2 to high school students.

Finite Math

I have a Master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin with a minor concentration in Computer Science. Finite Math, as is typically taught to business students, usually includes topics in basic probability and combinatorics, statistics, linear programming, and matrix algebra. I have learned this material in various courses (Probability, Logic, Linear Programming, Linear Algebra, etc.) in my mathematics and computer science coursework. I have experience tutoring basic probability and combinatorics to business students.

Geometry

I have a Masters degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin. While a graduate student, I taught mathematics to undergraduates. As a mathematics instructor, I noted that most students got their first introduction to mathematical thinking in Geometry class. During my second career as an aerospace engineer, I used Geometry to solve problems in Navigation and Guidance.

Prealgebra

I have a master's degree in mathematics. As a graduate student, I taught mathematics to undergraduates. I have industry experience as an aerospace engineer and I also have experience tutoring mathematics to high school students, including prealgebra.

Precalculus

I have a Masters degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin. While a graduate student, I taught pre-calculus and trigonometry to undergraduates. During my second career as an aeronautical engineer, I had many occasions to apply pre-calculus to my work.

Trigonometry

I have a masters degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin. While a graduate student, I taught PreCalculus and Trigonometry to undergraduates. During my second career as an aeronautics engineer, I have had many occasions to apply trigonometry to my work.

Exceptionally knowledgeable, confident and patient mathematics tutor.

Gladys taught me how to find radius and equation of a circle, absolute value and types of factoring among other pre-calculus items. I like how Gladys is not only enthusiastic about what she was teaching me, but also was so confident in her knowledge so she could go slow and teach me step-by-step. Gladys helped me to build my confidence in the topic so I can actually enjoy learning more about pre-
