Hello! My name is Angela C. and I am a recent graduate student from the Montclair State University master's program in Biology, Ecology, and Evolution. Prior to earning my master’s degree, I also received my bachelor’s degree in Biology with two minors in Psychology and Cognitive Science. During my education, I worked at the university as a Teaching Assistant for two years which gave me lots of experience in educating college students. I have taught 15 classes which range in topics from Biological Sciences, Principles of Biology, and Introduction to Ecology. Additionally, I just started a new position as an Adjunct Professor which is providing me with even more freedom to teach classes the way I think is the most suitable. I believe that one of my biggest advantages when tutoring comes from my perspective.
Being that I was only a student a couple of months ago, it offers me an understanding of both the student and teacher roles. For example, reading and being quizzed solely from a textbook did not work for me. I heavily relied on visual aids and hands-on activities which now is a large component to the way I teach/tutor. When I teach, I also offer one-on-one office hour sessions that allow me to help students with individual needs.
My tutoring methods consist of many examples and real-world applications. When I was a student, learning about chemistry did not make any sense to me until I understood that it is all around us.
Therefore I work at implementing methods that build the new knowledge onto current knowledge. Before working at the university, I also worked as a tutor online through several other online educational tools, such as StudySoup and Numerade. Additionally, I have tutored kids with learning disabilities aged 6-12 for three years in topics ranging from biology, math, art, and history. All together, my experience in teaching and tutoring spans many years, topics, and the students learning levels.
