I am a lively Language Arts and Theatre teacher and director with thirty years' experience in schools, a great sense of humor, and a passion for exploring humanity alongside my students. I hold a B.A. from Yale and an M.A. from Teachers College, Columbia University. I believe in experiential learning, and have taught students of diverse aptitudes across the U.S. and abroad. Having grown up overseas amid languages that were not my own, I was tutored quite a bit myself, and prize the value of one-on-one instruction. As a tutor, I specialize in English Literature, Writing, Reading Comprehension, and French. Although the bulk of my experience has been in high schools, I work with individuals at any skill level, from elementary through graduate school and beyond. I also coach public speaking, as well as auditions, including Shakespeare and musical comedy. I love to infuse my teaching with the energy of my performing arts background, and seek to balance rigor and joy in every session. I am brand new to Wyzant, so not many reviews yet, but I have excellent references. You can read all about my methodology in the qualifications section of my profile. I look forward to working with you!

Yale BA in Comparative Literature; Teachers College, Columbia University MA in English Education. I am expert at literary analysis and critical thinking. That said, I have taught everything from remedial reading/writing to AP Literature. As a reading comprehension coach, I will help you make images in your mind so you can retain what you read. I can coach you to read in a dynamic, fluid way so you connect to characters and their circumstances. If the reading is dry or technical, I teach you tricks to latch on to the material so it feels relevant. If it's a hard topic, I stop at nothing to help you understand from the perspective of how you think, whether it be giving examples, using a metaphor, acting out a concept, or even drawing. I am equally a writing coach. See profile.

Bi-lingual in French. Brought up in Paris, schooled in Latin, Greek and German, thus am expert in helping you master complex grammar and decode new vocabulary. I design my lessons thematically, so the vocabulary and grammar arise organically from real-life situations. Together, we will step into the role of French speakers, and assume the style, intonation and accent in fun, virtual scenarios. Versed in experiential, interactive, current methodologies for teaching world languages.

That said, I have taught everything from remedial reading/writing to AP Literature. As a writing tutor, be it for an AP literature, or psychology essay, an article, or a PHD research paper, I can support you step by step through the writing process: brainstorming, selecting and narrowing your topic, structuring, drafting, and editing. We will rid your writing of the passive voice, eradicate the repetition from your sentences, and strengthen your word choice. I was schooled in Latin, Greek and German, and thus am expert in helping you master complex grammar and new vocabulary. As the advisor to many school newspapers, I have worked with writers, paragraph by paragraph, line by line. I will help you discover your own ideas and find your own writing voice.

Knowledgeable, patient and helpful.

Alison was an excellent tutor. I am a senior executive who was studying French on Duolingo because I was going to spend some extended time in Paris for both business and pleasure. I thought I could benefit from private tutoring, particularly focusing on conversing in basic French and understanding French when spoken by native Parisians. Alison was patient, instructive and very helpful. She was equally great at giving a constructive overview on the everyday use of past, future and present tenses, as she was on sharing practical colloquialisms. Highly recommend.

Brilliant French Tutor!!!!

Alison has been tutoring my daughter and son in French for a while now. My daughter is 5 years old and my son is 9. She does a brilliant job keeping them engaged and they're learning the language so quickly! I couldn't be happier. I can't recommend her highly enough!
