About Joseph

As an expert math tutor with more than 12 years of experience, I recognize that every student has different needs. To really understand math concepts, first you must learn the fundamentals.

I get great results, and have testimonials in the feedback sections of this profile describing how I helped a student improve from F to A and from two different clients who improved by 200+ points in combined SATs in 10 hours of tutoring. I have always helped students failing math improve to at least a C and usually better than that.

I mostly tutor calculus and honors high school math. I specialize in tutoring for advanced exams, such as the Calculus AP BC Exam and the math SAT level 2 subject test.

Teaching requires patience. I’m also aware that some learners need a variety of techniques and exercises in order to fully grasp certain concepts.

I explain math concepts in ways that are easy to understand. Memorizing concepts might work in other courses, but it doesn’t work that way with math. Abstract concepts are difficult for most people to grasp. We learn more effectively when ideas are explained in specific, concrete terms.

As an expert math ACT/SAT tutor, I patiently teach the basic mathematical facts that are included in the SAT, taking pains to guarantee that each student can complete every type of problem on that exam. I have current 790 math and 2350 composite SATs and 36 math ACTs. I have particular expertise on the math ACT, and am currently working on a book on it.

I’m WyzAnt certified in various writing areas as well and have professional experience in writing and editing, which has helped my students achieve spectacular results while improving their SAT/ writing scores.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have professional experience writing and editing and consistently score 35–36 on practice tests. I have provided tutoring and guidance extensively for both SAT and ACT writing exams. Certain grammar rules can trip students up, but once they learn what they are, this test is easy. I have helped many students make impressive improvements in their writing. .

ACT Math

ACT Math is different from SAT math because it covers material that is similar to what the student learned in school. I find out which areas the student has challenges with and teach and assign problems to improve those weaknesses. This is my strongest field of expertise, and I recently scored a perfect 36 on this test at a tutoring center. I am an expert at determining the types of problems that will appear on the test and am currently working on a book on the math ACT.

Algebra 1

When students are having trouble in Algebra I, they’re usually having trouble dealing with abstract concepts and/or pre-algebra material. For abstractness issues, I explain concepts in concrete terms the students can understand. If they aren’t grasping the basic concepts, I help them learn the earlier material as well as the current assignments.

I have helped student grades improve from an F to an A, have a math degree from Johns Hopkins, and current 790 math SATs.

Algebra 2

Generally help students failing Algebra II improve to a B or better, as indicated by great feedback here. I'm an expert in honors Algebra II, math degree from Johns Hopkins.

If students are having trouble in Algebra II, it often means their Algebra I skills are weak. In that case, will help the student with the basic concepts they need for current assignments. Often students have problems with abstract concepts, so in these situations I explain them in concrete terms that the students can understand.

American History

While I am mainly a math tutor, I scored 800 on my SAT subject test in American History and minored in history at Johns Hopkins. I have tutored many students in history and am passionate about the subject.

Calculus

Calculus is the subject I tutor the most. I know the material thoroughly, including Calculus II and the AP BC exam. When students are struggling in calculus, it often means they missed something in earlier classes. In that case, I will help them with the basic concepts they need for current assignments.

I have a math degree from Johns Hopkins, current 790 math SATs, and have helped students improve their grade from an F to an A.

Elementary Math

I get great results as an elementary math tutor because I focus on helping students improve from their current skill level. I have experience tutoring for challenging private schools and preparing students for math competitions.

English

I have professional editing and writing experience and current 770 writing SATs. I help students focus their thoughts and write careful responses that are on-topic and compelling. I also teach them how to correct their own grammar problems.

GED

Most students preparing for the GED are motivated but do not know how to prepare. While teaching them the math that will be on the test, I also help them by teaching test taking approaches and study skills. Not only do they pass the math GED, but they also learn how to study on their own.

Geometry

If a student is having problems in geometry, it is usually do to difficulty with proofs, difficulty with visualization, or general weakness in math. In addition to helping the student with current assignments, I will help them overcome the general problems I identify.

I have a math degree from Johns Hopkins, current 790 math SATs, and have helped students improve from F to A.

GRE

I have experience helping students get top scores, particularly in the Quantitative section. Have a math degree from Johns Hopkins.

Prealgebra

It is important that students understand prealgebra in order to be successful in later math and science classes. I have helped several students do well in prealgebra and create a strong foundation for their future courses.

Precalculus

Generally help students with a D/F improve to a B or better, as indicated by great feedback here. I have a math degree from Johns Hopkins.

I know all the precalculus material perfectly, including honors precalculus. When students have trouble in precalculus, it often means their algebra is weak. In that case, I will help them with the basic concepts they need for current assignments. Often students have difficulty with abstract concepts, in which case I explain them in concrete terms that the students can understand.

PSAT

It is important to start early with SAT tutoring. A student can usually improve combined scores by 100 points without tutoring or preparation. With the right approach, I can usually help students improve by over 300 points.

I have extensive experience in PSAT and SAT tutoring. I can score 78-80 in all sections. I use the approach of teaching the student the math that is on the test. Also, I use problems gotten wrong to work on areas that need to be improved. I am very thorough and get amazing results.

SAT Math

I have a math degree from Johns Hopkins and have helped students improve their scores from 680 or less to 780 or more on the math SAT. When tutoring, I teach the math on the SAT by covering the type of problems that students have trouble with, making sure they understand. I also teach various test taking techniques to help them succeed.

I am an expert on the Math Level II subject test and have helped students score 780-800 on it.

SAT Reading

I recently scored 790 on SAT Reading, and have extensive experience tutoring it and get great results. I take a systematic approach, using material such as "The Critical Reader" and real SATs. I teach the students methods for approaching sentence completion problems, and guide their study of vocabulary.

SAT Writing

I have professional experience writing and editing, and recently scored 770 in SAT writing. SAT writing is the easiest part to improve your score on. I have helped several students improve by more than 200 points in writing, primarily by just correcting basic grammar errors. I use "The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar" and real SATs.

SSAT

Helped several students prepare for the SSAT. Can tutor all sections and levels.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry combines concepts from algebra and geometry. If a student is having trouble in trigonometry, he or she is usually missing fundamentals of trigonometry or earlier math courses. I will help them with the fundamentals they need for their current assignments.

I have a math degree from Johns Hopkins, current 790 math SATs, and have helped students improve their grade from an F to an A.

Excellent, even if your child does not want a tutor.

My daughter was failing, did not want a tutor, and was convinced she would fail even with a tutor. She gave Joseph a chance and she passed her Final Algebra 2 exam with a 91! He is patient and takes the time needed to make sure your child understands. He knows his work and how to motivate children to do better.
