I use many different manipulatives (hands-on materials) and level reading books to reinforce students reading. Having been in the education arena for 11 years, I have seen a marked difference in those children who have the basic building blocks of language, namely, by way of systematic phonics instruction. I am a firm believer of phonics. Schools today have moved from "phonics" to "whole language" and "gradual phonics" which has left the significant deficit in a child's ability to sound out words and read with ease.
Early systematic instruction in phonics provides the child with the skills necessary to become an independent reader at an early age. Successful reading is in the central building block of your child's education. If a child knows how to read well they will not only feel confident but also enjoy school and begin to read to learn!
