About Me
I’m Dr. JY, a physicist, electrical engineer, and experienced Princeton Ph.D. tutor with U.S. patents and a lifelong love of teaching.

I hold both Ph.D. and M.S.E.E. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University with minor in Physics. My B.S. is in Theoretical Physics, and I’ve had the unique privilege of studying under six Nobel laureates.

I taught as a university teaching assistant at Princeton and Caltech, and have tutored in physics and mathematics since 2003, before online learning became popular. Teaching is my passion.

Teaching Philosophy
As a physics and math tutor and instructor online, my teaching style is results-driven, encouraging, and individually tailored to each student’s goals and background. I emphasize both a solid grasp of core concepts and the problem-solving techniques needed for top exam performance.

Whenever possible, I guide students through scientific exploration and discovery, mirroring how a professional physicist approaches challenges. This process not only improves understanding and confidence but also helps students develop curiosity, analytical thinking, and learning skills.

My ultimate goal is to make physics and mathematics clear, rewarding and inspiring so that each student leaves our sessions more capable and confident than when they arrived.

Subjects
I offer comprehensive tutoring in physics and mathematics, from middle school, high school to college level, including:
•Physics: AP Physics 1/2/C, SAT Subject Physics, GRE Physics, MCAT Physics
•Mathematics: Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, AP Calculus AB/BC, SAT Math, ACT Math, SAT Subject Math
Whether you’re preparing for the AP, SAT, MCAT or GRE exams, or simply want to strengthen your foundational understanding, I’ll create a personalized learning plan designed to help you excel. I teach one-on-one sessions, small groups, and can adapt effectively to larger classroom settings.

Dr. Jay is hands down the most passionate teacher we have ever met!

Dr. Jay is hands down the most passionate teacher we have ever met. My son is already a high achiever in a very competitive school. He wanted to use his winter break to dive deeper into Physics; that being said, we were incredibly impressed by Dr. Jay’s session! Having tutored kids in the past, I can see how much he truly cares for his students. He has the ability to effectively guide students along a meticulously planned out schedule, allowing anyone to reach their full potential. According to my son, Dr. Jay's knowledge in Physics is so vast and deep that he can instantly identify any student's weak points, ensuring thorough memorization and mastery in those areas. If you're looking for a physics tutor (especially in preparation for a physics competition), you definitely will not have to look for one anymore. If you reach out to Dr. Jay, he will give you the training you need. He is a true scholar and teacher. We cannot thank him enough!

very well explained

He is a great tutor and explains things in context. Many teachers simply give students equations for them to plug in, but he makes sure to explain the process conceptually with context to ensure full understanding of the situation. Very Awesome!

A great method for teaching!

Me and Jay went over a few practice problems for my Physics C Mechanics test, and just with two of them, we had covered so many topics! Jay is able to understand very easily where you are struggling and helps boost your confidence by targeting those weaknesses. My physics test grades were not great before I had these sessions and learned how to really study for physics, but after this session I got a B on my unit 3 test. This was an awesome improvement!

Very knowledgeable tutor

Jay helped me understand the concepts better and approach the questions in a different way, I think working with him made me realize how easy math actually is. His explanations and solutions are detailed, and he does everything to make sure you understand the question. He is the best!

Knowledgeable, Patient, and Effective

I highly recommend this physics tutor for anyone looking to truly understand physics. He is extremely knowledgeable and have a deep command of the subject, from fundamentals to more advanced concepts. What really sets them apart is their ability to explain complex topics in a clear, structured, and intuitive way. They are also very patient, encouraging questions and never rushing through explanations. He is also open to follow up questions after session. Whether you’re preparing for exams, catching up on difficult topics, this tutor is an excellent choice.

A very engaging and reassuring tutor

I discussed work and energy concepts for my AP Physics C: Mechanics class with Jay. Jay was very engaging when he walked me through practice problems and reframed concepts in ways that were easy to understand. He reassured me that he would be able to help with my lack of understanding, since I jumped into advanced coursework with no prior physics experience. He demonstrated his tried and true method for solving all kinds of physics and problems, and he alerted me of common pitfalls when solving work and energy problems. I now feel more prepared for my unit test and am looking forward to more lessons with Jay in order to stay ahead. My only critique is that we did not cover much content in the 1 hour session. We did two practice problems that covered a few topics, but I would appreciate it

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Teacher Jay explained things in great details, which helped me connect different concepts together. I had a hard time visualizing the mathematical equations before, but after his clarifications, I can understand the logic and reason behind every equation. I can now put word problems into graphs. He is the best!

An exceptional teacher who makes difficult concepts feel simple

I am writing to share how happy my daughter, is after the two classes she has had with Jay. She has been struggling with AP Physics A course, and after taking just two sessions, she already feels she is in a much better place—both academically and mentally. She credits this progress to Jay’s exceptional ability to simplify complex material and explain concepts in a way that truly resonates with her. Thank you Jay for being so patient, encouraging, and clearly invested in ensuring she understands the “why” behind the concepts, not just the formulas. In my daughter’s words, “Jay is a genius.” My daughter, is eager to continue classes with Jay.

Outstanding Physics Tutor - Patient, Professional, and Effective!

Mr. Jay has been an absolute godsend for our daughter! She's a high school junior in honors physics who was really struggling. From our very first contact, Mr. Jay was incredibly responsive, professional, and accommodating. He took the time to understand her specific challenges and learning needs. The results after just ONE session were remarkable. Mr. Jay gave her a better understanding of her study guide questions and helped her feel prepared for her test. Mr. Jay's communication is excellent, his dedication is apparent, and his teaching methods really work. We immediately booked weekly sessions going forward because we could see the positive impact. I highly recommend Mr. Jay to anyone looking for a patient, knowledgeable, and effective physics tutor!

Supportive, Insightful, and Dedicated Physics Tutor

Dr. Jay is by far the best physics tutor I have met! As a student from a highly competitive public high school, I receive considerable pressure from preparing for both my current and future Physics courses. However, within one session, Dr. Jay devised an extremely thorough and effective plan tailored towards my future goals. His approach during lessons promotes a deeper understanding of concepts, and he guides me along a clear, structured path throughout. I am extremely excited to see what is in store for the future lessons I will be taking with Dr. Jay! I definitely recommend his lessons for any students who are struggling with Physics.
