Smart, hard working tutor with strong humanities background

My name is Martina and I am excited to be your new tutor! I grew up in Portsmouth, attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Middlebury College, and I am currently on a deferral year before starting law school in the fall at Columbia University. I majored in political science and as a result I have a strong background in writing, reading, history, and other humanities work. I also minored in French and studied abroad in Bordeaux in college, and as a result would be a great fit for someone looking for extra help with French.

I have always been drawn to teaching, working at various preschools during high school and college, teaching a once-weekly French class for elementary students at Middlebury, and tutoring students at a weekend study hall program in Boston after graduation. I think I am good at striking an ideal balance between helping students along and letting them figure out things on their own, and what I like best about teaching is watching students learn and progress over time!

I minored in French in college after studying French since middle school, and studied abroad for a semester in a French immersion program in Bordeaux. My French professors have been impressed by my pronunciation and writing abilities in particular, and during my semester abroad I authored 2 20-page final projects on economic development and the effects of the Dodd-Frank Act.

I have a strong background in English and general humanities work. I majored in Political Science in college, which required an incredible amount of reading and writing. I know how to read strategically to retain important information, and I also understand how to write with various audiences in mind - whether for persuasion, review, creative, or other pieces.
