As a recent master's graduate with a background in several different fields, my approach to tutoring is not just about helping students pass one class, but about providing them with the tools to succeed regardless of which subject they are delving into. My creative-writing focused associate's in liberal studies, my B.S. in astronomy (geosciences concentration), my M.S. in applied meteorology, and multiple real-world research experiences - everything from analyzing spectral data from Mars to modeling flood risk as a consequence of climate change - have given me a wide variety of subjects I am comfortable teaching, and a plethora of academic success strategies I have discovered along the way. In addition, prior experience working as a college writing tutor, a college math tutor, and an astronomy teaching assistant have taught me that no student has the same way they learn or the same goals in mind, so I aim to customize my tutoring approach to each person I work with individually.
I am most focused on working with college students, but am open to tutoring students at all academic levels, and am comfortable teaching creative and essay writing, astronomy, physics, earth sciences, and introductory programming in Python.
When working with students, I believe it is crucial to take the time to talk with them about their personal goals, where they feel they are struggling, and what they would like to work together to improve. I encourage my students to provide feedback on a plan of study, and to let me know if something is not working so that we can find a different approach to helping them meet their goals. To that end, along with verbal feedback, I also aim to provide my students with a written version as well, whether it's comments on an essay, a copy of work done on a digital whiteboard during sessions, or a shared document detailing what we went over that day. Ultimately, I believe tutoring is about meeting each student where they are, and helping them succeed and learn in the ways that work best for them.
