Bio

Sometimes all it takes to achieve a goal is someone to come alongside and help; that is my mission as a tutor. With both an undergraduate as well as a master's degree in education, my experience ranges across a wide spectrum, both of student personality types as well as specific academic goals.

Sometimes all it takes to achieve a goal is someone to come alongside and help; that is my mission as a tutor. With both an undergraduate as well as a master's degree in education, my experience ranges across a wide spectrum, both of student personality types as well as specific academic goals.

Using the analogy of a sports coach, I will instruct, encourage, and critique students in their progress toward their goals. My tutoring skill set includes SAT and ACT prep (math, verbal, and writing, as well as test-specific techniques and timing strategies) as well as essay writing, literary analysis, and English grammar. I also have several years of experience with middle school students, and am comfortable tutoring algebra and geometry.

I am a certified teacher with several years of experience guiding student development of personal study skills. I have helped students who needed simply a physical organization (books, papers, notebooks, etc. to be put in a system) as well as those who need more of mental organization (which steps of a project to do first, how to break down a larger concept into smaller & more manageable parts, etc.). I also have experience teaching students how to set academic goals and work (specifically and measurably) toward those goals.

ACT Math is slightly different than SAT Math, but there are some important areas of overlap. I have experience customizing tutoring to 1 specific test as well as a double-approach that addresses both the tests separately. Time management is also an important factor in the ACT Math test, and there are some specific strategies that can make that a lot easier.

Knowledgeable

We can't say thank you enough. Ms. Katie offered her Math tutoring to our son. During the session they were just laughing and it was clicking to him. After the session, he was able to finish his homework and he went from a test of 70 (which was reworked problems bringing his grade to a 70) to an 88 (missing (1 due to an error on his part) he knew it afterwards. He just needed someone who could help him over this hurdle. Thanks Ms. Katie. We will be using her again.

We had a fantastic experience with this Ms. Katie! My son not only learned so much, but actually had a great time doing it—a combination you don't usually hear when it comes to math.
