Hey, I'm Mike! After graduating with honors in composition from New England Conservatory, I've lived my entire life as a professional musician with many hats - conductor, pianist, composer - as well as a teacher to hundreds of students. Over the 15+ years I've been tutoring professionally, I've specialized in private piano, ear training, music theory, and composition lessons with students of all ages.

For students aged 5-18, I gave in-home piano and theory lessons where we would take an experiential approach to music theory, finding examples of theoretical concepts in the repertoire itself to examine, dissect, and understand how composers use theory to craft their works. I would guide students one-on-one through theory workbooks, including ABRSM materials, as well as create custom exercises to ensure an individualized approach.

At the university level, I was a music theory assistant during my senior year at NEC, privately tutoring undergraduate conservatory students who needed additional assistance. I have also tutored adults directly in piano and theory, and taught ear training in group settings to adults in choral settings.

I've recently returned to arranging and composition, and gave a day long guest lecture at a music school to undergraduate composition students working on a choral project with orchestra. We looked at examples in the repertoire of voicing, orchestration, and texture, and then used those best practices to review the students' own work and look for solutions to their own compositional problems.

My biggest goal as a teacher is to challenge you to get to the next level, but always patiently, to allow you to learn and discover in a warm, supportive environment. We'll also talk about specific learning strategies to be incorporated in between lessons, since that's when knowledge converts into ability. Please be in touch, I'd love to help you keep improving as a musician!

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

Composition was my first love as a musician, and I went on to receive my B.M. with honors from New England Conservatory of Music, also participating in summer training like the European American Musical Alliance's musicianship program in Paris. I won first prize in the 2004 International Trumpet Guild Composition Contest resulting in numerous performances by top conservatories, including two separate years in the National Trumpet Competition finals, as well as in concerts and recordings featuring former members of the Canadian Brass, Boston Symphony, and Israel Philharmonic.
Ear Training

Ear Training

Ear training has been a passion of mine since I fell in love with solfège at NEC while studying composition, where I also was a music theory teaching assistant in my senior year. I also spent a summer with the European American Musical Alliance's musicianship program in Paris, where we studied with a protégé of Nadia Boulanger and professors from the Juilliard School. Professionally, as a choral conductor of high-level amateur groups over 15+ years, the goal was always to be able to "hear everything". While it often appears magic - to be able to hear music in your head just from reading the notes on a page - it's a learnable, reproducible skill that can be developed through sight singing, rhythm work, dictations - and more - that I've done successfully with hundreds of students over the years.
Music Theory

Music Theory

Having studied composition at New England Conservatory and having worked only as a professional musician - pianist, conductor, and teacher for 15+ years - music theory has been part of my daily life since childhood. I have incorporated music theory into my piano lessons for hundreds of students over the years, and was also a music theory teaching assistant during my senior year at NEC.
Piano

Piano

I've taught piano to hundreds of students over 15+ years, and still stay in touch with many families. I was the principal pianist of the Rhode Island Children's Chorus for seven years, and performed with the Rhode Island All-State Choruses for nearly a decade. I was also the pianist at Middlebury College's French School for nine years, giving recitals and accompanying undergrad and graduate students throughout the summer.
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

Sight singing and ear training have been passions of mine since I fell in love with solfège at NEC while studying composition. From my formal training, experience as pianist with top choirs performing at American Choral Director's Association conventions, as well as my 15 years as a choral director, I've developed the capacity to read four parts at once on the keyboard, and love passing on the joy of sight reading to students!
