I’m a Mechanical Engineering student at Union College with a minor in English Literature and have spent the past several years tutoring students through Schoolhouse, an SAT prep platform affiliated with Khan Academy. Through that program I worked with high school students preparing for the SAT. Because I’m pursuing a technical degree while also studying literature, I am comfortable moving between the analytical reasoning that the math section requires and the close reading necessitated by the verbal section, allowing me to tailor sessions to students.
I work with students to determine where exactly their understanding ends. For math sections that often means going back to foundational concepts before building up to the specific question types. For reading and writing sections I’ve found it is most important for students to know how to identify what a question is truly asking. I recommend that students read a book of their choice concurrently with tutoring sessions, as this is one of the best—and fun—ways to prepare for the SAT reading and writing section.I also help students build test taking habits to ace exams since time pressure is often as challenging as the content.
As an engineering student I use calculus every day in my coursework and can help students build a strong conceptual foundation in calculus. I also have 6+ years of experience with competitive debate, consistently ranking in the top 5, developing similar skills to the SAT reading and writing section.
Outside of academics, I’ve worked as an English tutor and a swim instructor, both of which involved teaching students of varying ages and comfort levels. I’m also a varsity crew athlete and have held leadership roles across campus, such as our SAE Baja team and as a finalist for the Truman Scholarship. These experiences taught me firsthand how to balance heavy academic workloads with other important commitments. My goal in every session is to make sure a student leaves having actually understood the content so that they may apply it independently.
