I taught middle school English and language arts for five years, most recently at a progressive independent school in Washington, DC, where I ran four sections a year of a writing-intensive curriculum as well as an after-school creative writing course.
My specialty is the part of writing that students find hardest to fake: having something to say and organizing it so a reader stays with you. I work on essays, reading comprehension, and the verbal and writing sections of the SSAT, SAT, and ACT.
I also spent four years advising eighth graders through competitive private high school admissions: writing their recommendation letters, curating their portfolios, and coaching them through interviews. If your family is applying to independent or boarding schools, I have seen that process from the inside of the sending school, which is a different and more useful vantage point than most tutors can offer.
Before that I taught in South Korea on a Fulbright grant and in Mongolia, working with large groups and every ability level. I have a BA in English from Northeastern with minors in linguistics and psychology.
I work well with students who have been told they are bad at writing, students who are bright and bored, and students who need the work broken into smaller pieces than a classroom allows. I am patient, I do not talk down to kids, and I would rather a student argue with me than nod along.
