I am an award-winning designer and educator with a career spanning Broadway, regional theatre, opera, dance, new work development, and higher education. I hold an MFA in Design from Yale School of Drama and am currently the tenured Head of Scenic Design at Dartmouth College while continuing to serve on the design faculty at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University. Previously, I spent six years teaching at the University of Connecticut, including four years as Area Head of Design and Technical Theatre, working with BFA and MFA students. My professional work includes the Broadway production of The Sound Inside at Studio 54, following its original production at Williamstown Theatre Festival.

I specialize in coaching high school, undergraduate, graduate, and early-career artists preparing for competitive theatre and design programs and professional opportunities. I have spent years teaching and mentoring designers in classrooms, studios, portfolio reviews, and one-on-one settings. I have assessed students for admission to competitive academic programs, evaluated thousands of resumes and applications, participated in hundreds of interviews, and chaired faculty and staff searches. I have also hired, trained, mentored, and recommended emerging artists professionally. At Williamstown Theatre Festival, three former interns I worked with went on to study at Yale, while others continued into graduate training and professional careers.

My coaching begins by identifying what is genuinely exciting and distinctive about each artist. In a world of polished templates, fast digital editing, and AI-assisted applications, candidates need more than a slick portfolio. I help students communicate how they think and what makes their perspective distinctive through portfolio selection and sequencing, presentation of process, written materials, and interview preparation. My goal is not to manufacture an ideal candidate, but to help each artist present the strongest and most authentic version of themselves.

Approved Subjects

Art History

Art History

I am a professional designer and professor with extensive experience teaching art, architecture, and design history to undergraduate and graduate students. My teaching connects works of art and architecture to their cultural, historical, and social contexts, with particular attention to how visual ideas develop across periods and disciplines. As a practicing theatre designer, I also bring a working artist’s perspective to visual analysis, helping students understand composition, style, material, space, and the ideas behind what they see. I work with students on course material, visual analysis, research, writing, and developing the vocabulary and confidence to discuss art thoughtfully.
Career Development

Career Development

Throughout my career as a professional designer, educator, and academic program leader, I have hired, trained, mentored, and recommended emerging artists as they transition from school into professional practice. I have evaluated thousands of resumes and application materials and chaired searches for tenure-track, visiting, adjunct, and staff positions, giving me extensive experience assessing candidates from the employer's side of the table. I have helped early-career artists pursue assistant and associate opportunities with leading designers including Rachel Hauck, Takeshi Kata, Dane Laffrey, and Alexander Dodge, while former students and interns have gone on to competitive graduate programs and professional careers. I help clients strengthen portfolios and resumes, identify realistic next steps, prepare for interviews, approach professional opportunities strategically, and communicate what makes their experience and perspective distinctive.
College Counseling

College Counseling

As a former Area Head of Design and Technical Theatre for BFA and MFA programs and current faculty member at Dartmouth and Yale, I have extensive firsthand experience evaluating applicants for competitive arts programs. I have reviewed portfolios and application materials, interviewed prospective students, participated in admissions decisions, and mentored students who have gone on to leading undergraduate and graduate programs. I specialize in helping BFA and MFA applicants identify what is genuinely distinctive about them and communicate it cohesively through their portfolio, written materials, and interview. My approach draws on years spent on both sides of the admissions process and focuses on finding the right program and presenting an authentic, compelling candidacy rather than trying to manufacture a formulaic "ideal applicant."
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

I have participated in hundreds of interviews from the other side of the table, evaluating candidates for competitive academic programs, professional opportunities, faculty appointments, and staff positions. As a former BFA/MFA program leader and current faculty member at Dartmouth and Yale, I have extensive experience assessing how candidates communicate their ideas, experience, potential, and individuality in an interview setting. I specialize in preparing students and emerging professionals for BFA and MFA admissions interviews, portfolio reviews, and early-career professional interviews. My approach focuses on helping each candidate articulate what is genuinely distinctive about them with confidence and authenticity, rather than rehearsing formulaic answers.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have extensive experience teaching communication and presentation skills to undergraduate and graduate students, including courses focused specifically on communicating ideas clearly and persuasively. My own training includes acting and voice work, and I have coached students in presenting and defending ideas and artistic concepts before large groups, on stage, and in digital and Zoom settings. I work with students on clarity, confidence, pacing, preparation, audience awareness, and developing an authentic speaking style rather than relying on memorized delivery. I have also coached prospective students and early-career professionals in verbal communication for interviews, presentations, portfolio reviews, and other high-stakes situations.
Theater

Theater

I am an award-winning professional theater designer whose work has been seen on Broadway, at Williamstown Theatre Festival, and at theaters and performing arts organizations across the country. I am currently the tenured Head of Scenic Design at Dartmouth College and serve on the design faculty at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale, following six years teaching BFA and MFA designers at the University of Connecticut. I have taught and mentored students in theater design, visual communication, portfolio development, script analysis, and the transition from academic training into professional practice. I also bring extensive experience hiring, training, evaluating, and recommending emerging theater artists for professional opportunities.
