I have taught English Composition at the college level for 20 years. In addition, I have been employed as a professional writing tutor in the Academic Tutoring and Resource Center.

For me, the joy of teaching and tutoring English comes largely from being part of a student's transformation. As many students come to college lacking confidence in their intelligence and writing skills, I inspire them to attain higher goals. During this fascinating growth process, students start to believe in their abilities. As they gain the skills to compose a personal essay or a difficult research paper, they gain confidence. My presentation of grammar and punctuation in simple, easy-to-understand rules finally dispels the confusion that plagues many students' minds. It is most gratifying for me to see each student's effort and the progress result in a higher caliber of work. It is also a joy to simplify rules of MLA formatting for research papers. It's one of the things students dread the most!

Many of my students are required to complete a professional research paper. Aside from gathering information on a topic, students learn how to formulate a thesis statement and maintain focus on the statement throughout the paper. Although it is difficult to make the leap from a high school information based paper to a more focused, professional paper, students take on the task and work hard to earn good grades. As always, I assist patiently, every step of the way.

I have tutored students from many backgrounds and age groups. I approach each student with respect, patience, and a desire to help. I embrace the challenges of tutoring. I focus on every student as a unique individual with different educational backgrounds and experience.
