Vermont College of Fine Arts (Master's)
Greetings. Thank you for checking out my profile. My name is Darren. I have been writing for over twenty years, both in the academic and personal realms. As an undergraduate at Lyndon State College, I tutored for three years, assisting students in all class levels as well as a variety of subjects. The writing projects ranged from short essays to research papers that constituted an entire semester's grade. During graduate studies at Vermont College of Fine Arts, proofreading and critiquing fellow students' work honed my skills. Additionally, I completed both creative and critical theses. Several of my writings are published.
“Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” Tutoring is no less an expedition. The student will be shown how to independently critique their own work and develop methods ensuring elevated writing skills. A first meeting with the student will be utilized to determine their strengths and challenges through a previously submitted writing sample. A brief example of a syllabus follows. I assist the student in identifying their writing strengths. If it is a short paper, two to three pages, we generally will go through the entire thing on our first assignment together. On subsequent assignments we will walk through the beginning of the paper, and then have the student go through the remainder with me present, pointing out subsequent areas where improvements can be made. It is extremely important that the student’s voice come through in their writing, and not mine. Doing so will help solidify the techniques and rules of writing. An individualized syllabus will be provided to each student after the initial meeting.
Tutoring in other subjects follows the same premise. I believe in addition to assisting with specific assignments, it is my goal for the student to be confident in the learning process. To that end, in addition to the specific assignments, we will work on skill development in the areas of study. It is my intent to teach students to fish, whether the road be Psychology or English.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
