I have been working in natural language processing as a linguist, NLP engineer, and machine learning scientist at Amazon Alexa for the past 8 years. I have a Bachelor's degree from the University for New Hampshire in linguistics with a double major in German, minor in Russian, and additional focus in Mandarin Chinese. I have been working in natural language processing as a linguist, NLP engineer, and machine learning scientist at Amazon Alexa for the past 8 years. I have a Bachelor's degree from the University for New Hampshire in linguistics with a double major in German, minor in Russian, and additional focus in Mandarin Chinese. I also have a Master's degree in Applied Data Science from Syracuse University.

My daily work at Amazon Alexa involves the heavy use of python for data science tasks like exploratory data analysis, processing massive datasets, extracting business information from that data, writing reports, and training machine learning models. Much of this work requires applying NLP concepts to data science such as creating custom tokenizers, transforming text into machine- and human-readable formats, and generating new data from preexisting data. The vast majority of this work over the years has been done in languages other than English. I have been published as the main or contributing author a few times, and the papers can be readily found on the amazon.science website under my name.

For language skills, I am professionally proficient in German and conversational in Mandarin Chinese, the latter of which is kept up with the help of my wife whom I met while teaching English language, German language, and American culture at a Chinese university after completing my Bachelor's degree prior to starting at Amazon. During my time as an undergrad, I routinely tutored German of all levels, and after graduating, taught introductory Chinese one-on-one to a college senior. As mentioned above, I also have experience in Russian as well as Middle High German and most recently, Old Norse.

I have spent a year and a half living in Chengdu, China. I completed all necessary coursework for a Chinese minor at the University of New Hampshire; however, no minor exists as of yet because of university politics. Also at UNH, I completed up through the first semester of third year (advanced) Chinese. I am looking to only tutor beginner to intermediate Mandarin. I have also passed HSK 3.

My daily work involves the heavy use of python and NLP on large data sets to extract meaning from them, prepare them for use in training ML models, and evaluating the results of those models.
