Hi! I'm Sarah! I have been in education for over 20 years! I have degrees in Elementary Education, Spanish, Curriculum and Instruction, Teaching English as a Second Language, Educational Leadership, and Education Specialist (superintendent). I am currently a doctoral student! I have been a classroom teacher, an ESL teacher, a director of curriculum and instruction, and a principal of alternative high schools.
Needless to say, I LOVE LEARNING! But, it wasn't always that way. I did well in elementary and thought I was a genius! But, then I had to start applying that knowledge in middle and high school, and I struggled. I still got great grades, but it didn't seem to come as easily to me and I felt like I was faking it. I know what it's like to struggle to understand concepts everyone else seems to get without help. I know what it's like to sit through several class periods, take notes, engage in the class, put in all of my effort, and not understand a single thing. It finally started to fall back into place in my undergraduate college, which is probably why I keep taking classes! I figured out how I learned best and how to connect new learning to old. I now think that that is what makes me such a strong teacher.
Throughout my time in education, I have worked with hundreds of students from elementary through graduation and college. I create learning environments that reduce anxiety and increase understanding. I have worked with kids who had missed several years of school, yet, I was still able to get them graduated on time. When I work with kids to reach their goals, we are not just getting a single grade or a piece of paper in a diploma, we are working on truly understanding how learning works. I not only teach concepts and standards, but I work with students to help them figure out who they are as learners and to become self-sustaining and independent, curious learners. We build on strengths, we do not focus on deficits. You will reach your goals, and that success, will drive you forward with excitement!
