I have 35 years of teaching experience. I am a professional driven to create an environment that promotes hands-on learning for children at all stages of the learning process. I am a motivated leader with extensive knowledge of the education system and educational testing standards. I am an exceptional communicator with advanced problem-solving skills. I am also professionally versed in collaborating with teachers and parents to best meet each individual's unique needs. I am attentive to the physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs of each student.
My teaching experience has been in the classroom setting and in small group instruction. I have taught in grades 2, 3, and 4. My small group instruction has been with high ability students, K-6, in reading, math, creative technology skills. I was selected one of eight teachers in 2009 from across the country as Innovative Educator for my work with using creative software with students to add pizzazz to their research work. This award was sponsored by Tech4 Learning software company. I am an expert in using the program Pixie, a creative software that helps students share their learning through text, original artwork, voice, and images.
I have experience working with a wide diverse student population. For 10 years I taught in the inner city of Omaha, NE. My second graders had difficulty with reading, using correct grammar and vocabulary. It was rewarding to watch a student coming into 2nd grade not having mastery of reading skills to leaving the classroom at the end of 2nd grade reading on grade level.
My undergraduate work was in Elementary Education. I had classes that taught basic phonic strategies. I was able to put all I learned into practice right away with an internship my senior year in an elementary 3rd grade setting where the students were emergent readers just beginning to learn how to read from a phonetic approach.
I have my Masters Degree in Instructional Technology. One of my jobs that I have had was at All Saints Catholic School, Omaha, Nebraska, working as the computer lab teacher. My duties included teaching students K-8 keyboarding, basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and PowerPoint. Besides regular scheduled instruction time in the lab, students came in for individual help with research and writing papers and creating elaborate projects to show off their learning.
Using the creative software, Pixie, students learned how to create digital slide shows and movies to show off research information. Storytelling slide shows, posters and movie making projects were submitted to various contests that brought awards to individual students.
My aim is always to raise the achievements of my pupils beyond their own expectations with challenging and rewarding lessons. Students if you want to put a little pizzazz into your research work then I am your expert to help you show off your work with class. I have 35 years of teaching experience. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I learned phonics teaching strategies in my Elementary Education program.
I have had experience using phonics strategies, sight words, cvc, with beginning readers.
I learned to read using phonetics: sounding out words, memorizing rules like the first vowel does the talking and the second vowel does the walking. I have used the same strategies with students and it works the best!
