I hold a Ph.D. in English Language and Literature from the University of Maryland, College Park, as well as an M.A. in English and a B.A. in English and Philosophy. My academic background combines literary analysis, rhetoric, composition, research, and critical thinking.
I bring more than 25 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I currently teach AP English Language and Composition, 11th Grade English, and 12th Grade English at Omaha South High School in Omaha, Nebraska. Prior to returning to Nebraska, I spent sixteen years as a university professor, including service as a tenured Associate Professor of English. I have taught composition, literature, Shakespeare, technical writing, critical thinking, and research methods. I also directed writing centers at two universities, where I trained and supervised peer tutors and worked one-on-one with students on writing, reading, and study skills.
My tutoring style is student-centered and practical. Rather than simply providing answers, I help students learn how to think through problems, analyze texts, organize ideas, strengthen arguments, improve grammar and style, and develop confidence as independent learners. I tailor each session to the student's goals, whether that means improving grades, preparing for AP courses, strengthening reading comprehension, writing stronger essays, or building foundational academic skills.
I have worked with students ranging from high school through college, including honors students, first-generation college students, English language learners, and students who simply need extra support and encouragement. My experience includes classroom teaching, one-on-one tutoring, writing center consultations, online instruction, and mentoring independent research projects. Above all, I strive to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, taking intellectual risks, and developing the skills they need for long-term success.
