About Mike

Bio

I am a Classics Professor currently teaching at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada. This is the top liberal arts program in the country. I've always been teaching-focused and have won the two national teaching awards in my field. This means I offer close one-on-one attention with a background you'll not easily find elsewhere. I've always taught at the university level, but I've recently begun working with students who are younger, but have college as a goal.

Here's what I'm best at. Greek and Latin language. Then literature (you name it)- but my speciality is Greek drama, specifically comedy! I can pretty much teach all over the undergraduate Classics curriculum, and much of basic English lit and European history. My special courses (used to be between 90 and 500 students!) were: Sparta, Athens, Ancient Athletics, and Ancient Drama/Modern Context. I have taught at large state schools (University of Nebraska Lincoln and University of Arizona) and smaller private schools (Duke, Emory, Rollins). I have also taught a fair amount of adult ed courses, if you are reading this and looking for a return. Finally, I have led many trips abroad to Greece, so I like to prep people for their trips.

Honestly, given this format, I'd say you can only get part of the story. I recommend that you check out my CV (findable online) or look up my most recent book "Men and Their Horses" (a translation of Aristophanes' Knights, co-authored with a great friend).

I do love teaching languages, and I stand by this statement. If you're reading this, you ought to be taking Ancient Greek. Trust me, it's all better in the original. And once you learn Greek (or Latin), you can do everything! I can't emphasize this enough!

Also, if you're reading this...my plan is all online. And my pay scale is flexible, depending on what you want to do. Best to contact me...and we can talk.

Approved Subjects

Classics

Classics

My Ph.D. is in Classics. I have won the Society for Classical Studies National Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2018 and the Classics Association of the Mid West and South Undergraduate Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2020. I have over twenty years of undergraduate teaching experience and have taught over thirty three unique classes for a total of around one hundred and thirty individual Classics courses.
Greek

Greek

I have taught Greek from the intro level to the graduate level (so first year to sixth year) and, as mentioned before, have won national teaching awards, due in large part to my Greek teaching.
Literature

Literature

In addition to normal Classical literature, I often include later texts (Shakespeare, Orwell, Heller, Vonnegut) in my classes, and I am a pretty voracious reader. Plus I was an English major.
