About Heidi

Having taught reading and special education for eight years, I feel strongly about incorporating a student's interests and strengths into whatever subject matter we are covering. I am creative and innovative in my explanations and presentations of the subject matter. I can adapt it to an individual's abilities. Knowing that not all students learn most effectively in the same manner, I utilize multisensory approaches whenever possible and appropriate. My goal during the course of a tutoring session is for the student to experience some degree of success. My methods are not always conventional -- my background in speech and theatre ensures that -- but they are responsive to and respectful of the individual's needs. If one way of teaching a topic is not working, I can think quickly of a different way. Everyone can learn anything given the resources, time, and opportunity. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I graduated from seminary with a Master of Divinity degree.

Dyslexia

For eight years I taught students with all types of learning disabilities, including dyslexia. Yearly reviews of what it was like to be a student with dyslexia resulted in my continuous search for resources that would allow students to focus on a word or a line instead of being overwhelmed by an entire page of print. Because of my double major of Elementary Education and Special Education I am also familiar and experienced with techniques such as Orton-Gillingham.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. I taught kindergarten and first grade for one year and Grades 3-5 for eight years. My work outside of the public schools has included directing a tutoring program and writing curricula for students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Phonics

During the course of teaching reading for eight years, I taught phonics to kindergartners through fifth graders. I first received training in teaching phonics while in college. I continued to learn more about teaching phonics through local and national workshops.

Public Speaking

In college I minored in language arts which required a minimum of three public speaking courses. After that, I coached competitive public speaking for eight years. While in grad school, I took an additional three public speaking courses. Now I do public speaking on a weekly basis.

Special Needs

In college I had a double major of Elementary Education and Special Education. My eight years of teaching following graduation from college was in a special education setting. Beside students with academic special needs, I was the first choice of teachers for students with behavioral, emotional, mental, and physical special needs.

Theatre

I have developed children' theatre workshops, directed high school plays, and coordinated over 20 community theatre productions.
