Hello! I’m Matt. I have degrees in philosophy (BA), classics (MA) and history of Christianity (MTS and PhD). I love learning!

Hello! I’m Matt. I have degrees in philosophy (BA), classics (MA) and history of Christianity (MTS and PhD). I love learning!

Teachers have been incredibly important in my life and that is why I became one (although it also runs in the family!). I even named a child after my favorite professor.

I have been teaching since 2006 and have taught high school Italian, Latin and religion at the high school level. At the university and graduate level I have taught Latin, Greek, history, and religion. I have tutored SAT and Latin. I have also taught English as a tutor- in Italian!

I have designed about 25 different courses in my career and reworked those classes over the years. I am a demanding professor and get the best out of my students, especially in their writing, but we have a lot of fun too.

My tutoring style is more relaxed. Rather than calling an entire classroom to work at the university level, I am able to meet individuals where they are and work towards their goals.
My approach to tutoring is student centered: I don’t teach material, I teach students and help them come to a deep understanding of the subject at hand. The goals of different students will vary, of course. Some want to do well on the SAT, but in most of the other areas in which I have taught the goal is mastery (of a language, writing and grammar, or a subject area). The final goal is, of course, for the student to become an independent learner or to perform well on an exam on their own.

My tutoring sessions are warm and my approach is flexible. If you need more time on a
particular area, we can spend time on it. If you don’t understand my explanation, I have
mastered the material and taught long enough to teach the subject in different ways.

If you want a tutor who has a love of learning and the humanities, please contact me.

I believe the clarity of communication comes from clarity of thought. Because I grade my students' arguments, not their conclusions, I pay especial attention to their writing. I have published two

Matt is my son’s ‘Guru'

Matt is a brilliant teacher with great tutoring and mentorship skills. My son, who is currently in 10th grade (sophomore), was experiencing challenges to learn Latin and cope up with a demanding syllabus when his Latin teacher at school left 2 months after the start of the school year. His grades started to go downhill and he was demotivated. I’m glad that we found the right help with Matt. From the first tutoring session itself, we saw the revival of my son's interest in learning Latin. To our happiness, my son’s grades improved significantly. Matt's stronghold on the language and his phenomenal experience as an educator have enabled him to flex his teaching strategies with my son to bring the best out of him. I'm grateful to him for not just teaching the subject so well, but motivating my son, kindling the spark in him to excel in life.

Knowledgable-patient tutor

Matt was an excellent Greek tutor. He helped my son review the vocab and had my son read a story in Greek. I will continue to use Matt if he is available for my son's Greek lessons. Thank you, Matt.

Exceptional Tutor!

Matt is an incredibly knowledgeable and caring tutor. He has worked with my son on pronunciation, grammar, and comprehension. My son’s Latin teacher has noted a marked improvement (and it is reflected in his grade)! I feel lucky to have found Matt and highly recommend him!

Ancient Greek

I've had several lessons now with Matt and intend to continue indefinitely. He's exactly what I was looking for in a tutor: patient, very knowledgeable, and also flexible and willing to adapt the program to my needs and interests. I'm at an intermediate level in Ancient Greek but I'm sure he would be excellent with both beginners and more advanced students as well. Highly recommended.

Saved me from Withdrawing Greek

Had my first lesson with Matt today! Was so close to withdrawing from my Introductory Greek class, but today’s session helped me feel like I could actually grasp so many of the concepts I’ve been grappling with for the last month. He explains the material from a more pedagogical perspective, emphasizing the way in which and order with which to memorize information— also helpful tips and tricks! He seems very dedicated to the success of his students and passionate about the Greek language, so I definitely feel confident in my choice of tutor and look forward to learning more from him.

Knowledgeable and enthusiastic educator

Matt is a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic educator and has an engaging approach towards learning Latin. His lessons are rigorous and yet very encouraging which have the outcome of building confidence. He us very supportive during the lessons. Our 8th grade daughter feels comfortable with Matt and says her knowledge, understanding and translations are improving! Thank you Matt! Matt also takes the time after each lesson to write us and let us know how the lesson went and what should be worked on. We are thinking of continuing through the summer with a lighter schedule.

knowledgeable, patient and well organize

Matt is an excellent tutor. Matt is the best tutor we have ever had for my son. He organizes my son and he is teaching him to do his work step by step instead of relying on him and just finishing his essays for a grade. Matt is working so hard to help my son to improve his writing.
