Cultivate a musical practice that will bring peace and joy into your life.

My holistic approach to teaching encourages students to apply their newfound skills to their real lives, bringing the lessons out of the practice room and into the world. In my 20+ years of training and experience, I have studied many approaches to habit-building, practice efficiency, and musical self-care. Unfortunately, this last component of self-care seems neglected in many western studios and schools today. I believe that the way we treat ourselves during times of challenge directly impacts how successful we will be in overcoming that challenge. My studio focuses on building patience and awareness of self, so that when you are digging into the difficult (but super cool) stuff, you’ll have the inspiration you need to get the most out of it!

As a songwriter, my unique sound has been referred to as “creepy pop” and “dark cabaret.” I draw inspiration from a wide range of genres, including classical, metal, pop, rock, R&B, bluegrass and folk. The magic is in blending it all up and creating new eclectic sounds! I know that art can have a powerful impact on our experience, and I hope that my music will encourage listeners to explore and heal their own relationships with darkness. As Thich Nhat Hanh puts it beautifully: “No mud, no lotus.”

Ready to tear down some walls and expand your comfort zone? Schedule a lesson! Learning a new instrument is a powerful way to build courage while strengthening weak points, and to find the growth that can only come from facing challenges head-on. If you’d like to discuss rates or scheduling, please feel free to reach out to me — I’m flexible! Lessons available online or in-person. Experienced with students of all ages and skill levels. Cello

Cello

I received my BFA in cello and composition from the California Institute of the Arts. I attended a performing arts high school program at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where I earned my high school degree with a focus in cello. I've been teaching cello online and in-person, in individual and group settings for over 7 years. I've performed in various local operas, musicals, symphonies, and ensembles, and I have recorded cello for use in other artists' songs and projects.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I received my BFA in Cello and Composition from the California Institute of the Arts, as well as a High School Diploma in Cello from UNCSA. At both conservatories, I received over 6 years of intensive music theory training. As a film composer and songwriter, my understanding goes beyond the conceptual -- I actively apply real music theory in my everyday life. I am trained in western music theory ranging from the medieval period up through modern times, with a special emphasis on baroque performance (studied with Allan Vogel and Patricia Mabee).
Piano

Piano

I've been teaching piano for over 7 years from my studio, local schools, and online. I started taking piano lessons when I was 6 years old. I've been performing as a solo pianist and keyboardist in multiple local bands for over 12 years. Recordings of my piano performances and compositions have been used in various other artists' songs and films, including the upcoming feature Tinsman Road (2023).
Songwriting

Songwriting

With my BFA in composition and cello from CalArts, I have over 14 years of experience in writing, producing, and publishing songs across many genres, ranging from pop to metal to folk. My distinctive sound has been referred to as "creepy pop" and "dark cabaret". I'm comfortable working within a variety of DAWs, including Studio One, Ableton, Logic, and Cubase. I released my first album at the age of 14, and my songs have been featured in multiple independent films, most recently The Outwaters (currently in festivals).

Knowledgable and Patient Tutor

This was a first lesson and Salem patiently worked to determine skill level and what goals and objectives the student had. Having done so, Salem designed activities that supported those objectives and supervised there execution with patient, constructive criticism as appropriate. Salem is an excellent teacher and mentor
