I have extensive experience helping individual students discover and work with their unique strengths and challenges -- first for ten years as a classroom teacher in a small private school and currently as a tutor of all grade levels. I have a Master's Degree in Writing and a BA with Honors in English. So, it's no surprise that Writing, Reading, Language Arts, Grammar and Literature are the subjects I am most passionate about! I have extensive experience helping individual students discover and work with their unique strengths and challenges -- first for ten years as a classroom teacher in a small private school and currently as a tutor of all grade levels. I have a Master's Degree in Writing and a BA with Honors in English. So, it's no surprise that Writing, Reading, Language Arts, Grammar and Literature are the subjects I am most passionate about! I have tutored all grade levels -- first grade through college -- and am available to assist your student with their classroom challenges. I am also available to develop individualized assignments separate from a student's schoolwork, as your situation requires.

My biggest goal in working with students is to help them understand themselves. ALL students have amazing strengths as well as challenges. Students who need extra assistance in learning to become more confident readers and writers are the ones I feel most drawn to assist. Watching the bloom of confidence and success dawn in the faces and attitudes of my students is one of my greatest joys!

I have a lifelong love of literature (I wrote my undergraduate Honors Thesis on Shakespeare!) that assists me in making reading fun and engaging for students. I am also passionate about helping students who struggle with writing assignments (be they paragraph, essay or research paper) to create a process that feels manageable and do-able. This often requires an approach as individual as each student. Addressing a student's true individual needs is my specialty!

Tutoring is my full-time gig, so I have maximum flexibility in scheduling sessions. My tutoring calendar tends to fill quickly, however. So, arranging an on-going tutoring time as early in the school year as possible is key. I am available to discuss your student's particular needs prior to scheduling a session, if you would like. I am also happy to provide references to any prospective parents who may be interested.

I spent ten years as a high school English teacher and have been working as a tutor for over eight years. I specialize in assisting students with their written expression, including work on grammar issues. I have, as well, assisted students in raising their ACT English score with the application of practical, doable strategies.

My qualifications to work with homeschool students begin with the 10 years I spent teaching high school English in a very small private high school (never more than 25 total students) in Virginia. This school's program was created and developed by a homeschool parent and was based on teaching in a home environment. At that time, I also created a separate series of classes on Shakespeare for homeschool students. More recently I have tutored homeschool elementary-aged students.

Really smart and really nice - great communicator

I needed a tutor in a pinch. My son had an English paper which required some confidence building and brainstorming. Martha responded immediately. I was hesitant about online tutoring but it worked out very well. My son described Martha as "Really smart, really nice, very good teacher." That sounds obvious but trust me not everyone who knows a subject can teach it. I'm very grateful to Martha and will absolutely ask for her services again.
