It's nice to meet you — I'm Brooklyn! In the past, I have served as a student mentor and peer advisor for 80+ undergraduate university students, helping them communicate their ideas better. Currently, I serve as a teaching assistant at Wake Forest University, and I have also guest lectured in the classroom several times in the past for undergraduate courses at George Fox University and Wake Forest University. I serve students mostly in subjects such as Communication, English, and Writing, since that is what I studied for my BA.

Additionally, I am currently working in these areas for my MA in Communication. I also have experience professionally in marketing and journalism, with several long-form pieces published in "The George Fox Journal," "The Bruin Blog," "The Wineskin," etc.

My teaching style is conversational, practical, and hands-on, which often includes activities and engaged practice to make the content genuinely memorable and useful. In class and in tutoring sessions, I often use examples from pop culture, or I ask students to apply the course concepts to their own lives through an activity, so we can see how the concepts are actually used rather than just studying them in the abstract. I also focus on going at a pace that engages the student(s) rather than a pre-established pace — I remember in school when we would sometimes take things too slowly or too quickly, it would disengage me from the actual learning process! Since one-on-one tutoring is based on an interpersonal relationship, it allows us to work at a pace that emphasizes your growth and learning.

Approved Subjects

Classics

Classics

I read 80+ classical texts as a part of the 3-year Honors Program at George Fox University, for which I was a Peer Advisor. I wrote weekly reflections on these texts, as well as longer papers each semester, which made arguments using these texts as support. As a Peer Advisor, I helped welcome 80+ new students to the program, and I gave two guest lectures on my note-taking process for classical texts to new undergraduate students.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I have several creative writing publications in The George Fox Journal and The Bruin Blog (marketing), and I also have been published in The Wineskin (creative nonfiction). I am a student for my MA in Communication at Wake Forest University, and prior to my time here, I graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Communication and a minor in Writing from George Fox University.
English

English

I completed a Great Books/Classics honors program in three years while earning my undergraduate degree, which required reading a variety of literature (from ancient to postmodern) to participate in 2.5-hour seminars twice a week. I was a Peer Advisor for this program due to high grades and strong leadership skills, and I loved serving other students! I also minored in Writing while earning my bachelor’s degree, which required taking American Literature, Literary Criticism, and other literature courses. I still continue my literature background even now as I earn my MA in Communication, especially in courses such as Rhetorical Theory.
Linguistics

Linguistics

I am currently studying for my master's degree in Communication at Wake Forest University. Linguistics' focus on how words are formed and given meaning is often explored in my courses, especially in rhetorical criticism and interpersonal communication. I graduated magna cum laude with my bachelor's degree in Communication at George Fox University.

Religion

Religion

I read a variety of Christian theological texts while serving as a Peer Advisor for the 3-year Honors Program at George Fox University (a Christian University). My favorite theological texts were those during the Reformation, as well as more recent texts where modern and post-modern Christian thought are clashing today. I also took a course titled Philosophy of Religion and Apologetics during my undergraduate studies, which I loved. Now, while I earn my MA in Communication at Wake Forest University, I continue to take theology courses, such as a course titled "St. Augustine's Confessions," as well as a course titled "Agape & Eros."
Sociology

Sociology

I am currently studying for my master's degree in Communication at Wake Forest University. Sociology's focus on broader social impacts is often explored in my courses, especially in rhetorical criticism. I graduated magna cum laude with my bachelor's degree in Communication at George Fox University.
