I have coached audition prep for undergraduate and graduate acting programs, taught adult acting and stand-up comedy classes, and edited a full length novel. As an acting coach, my expertise is Shakespeare. I can teach anyone to naturalize his language. My command of his Elizabethan dialect informs and deepens my understanding of modern English as well. As a stand-up comedian, I wrote all my own material, and my main task as a teacher of stand-up is editing. The same principles of economy and clarity which applied to the writing of my political science undergraduate thesis apply to joke-writing, indeed to all writing.
As a writer, you will benefit from my long and varied experience crafting spare, powerful prose. As an actor, you will benefit from my experience in both formal textual analysis and informal experiments in freedom of expression. It turns out that both sets of skills are crucial to the perfection of either classical acting or stand-up comedy. My goal is to help you optimize your expression of your own voice in service of whatever your particular goal is. This is true for acting, writing, or stand-up. I want to see your best Macbeth. I want to see your best argument for or against wind power in terms of it's ecological impact, in a form that will satisfy the guidelines of your college essay. I want to see your comic persona, hear your voice, perceive the world from your angle, as your dissect society's problems with your mordant wit (or base vulgarity, whatever works).
