I am a junior at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, pursuing dual degrees in Marine Biology and Environmental Sciences through the Honors Scholars College, with a concentration in Environmental Conservation. My coursework has taken me through chemistry, biology, genetics, statistics, and upper-level environmental science, giving me a strong working understanding of the material I'm applying to tutor. I scored a 1490 on the SAT and a 33 on the ACT, with perfect scores on the reading and writing sections of both, which reflects both my academic strengths and my ability to communicate clearly, a skill that matters as much as subject knowledge when it comes to teaching someone else.
My teaching experience began in high school, where I served as a teaching assistant for a chemistry professor, helping explain concepts to students who were struggling with the material and assisting with grading and classroom support. Since then, I have informally tutored peers in science, math, and writing on an ongoing basis, through tasks such as walking classmates through lab reports, helping peers prepare for exams, and reviewing essays for structure and clarity. This experience has been consistently one-on-one and centered on meeting each person where they are.
Over the past summer, I worked with children in grades 3 through 5 as a summer camp counselor at the Museum of Life and Science, which has developed my patience and my ability to break down ideas for learners at very different levels, but the bulk of my tutoring-relevant experience has been with peers at the high school and college level. I'm looking to bring that same one-on-one, individualized approach to tutoring, adapting explanations to how each student learns.
