Hi there! My name is Jacob and I am greatly looking forward for the chance to help you succeed with your academic goals.
I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2022 with a 3.7 GPA as a Chancellor's Science Scholar with a Fairchild Scholar distinction, which awarded me a near-full ride scholarship for the course of my four years. I graduated with a B.S. in Biology, a B.A. in Peace, War, and Defense, and a minor in Chemistry. I currently am in the process of building my medical school application, having scored a 518 (95th percentile) on the MCAT in 2023. My sub-scores were 99th Percentile in Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, 92nd Percentile in Chemistry/Physics, 90th percentile in Biology/Biochemistry, and 85th percentile in Psychology/Sociology.
With over a year and a half of tutoring experience with students ranging from elementary to high school, I have numerous approaches to help students succeed. My primary tutoring focuses are in math, including Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, Biology, and Chemistry. I have typically tutored in either 1-on-1 or small group environments with groups of 3 or less.
My tutoring approach focuses heavily on my students ability to cohesively and succinctly explain the material back to me and themselves in order to fully understand no only how to approach the problem in front of them, but the concept behind the 'why'. After reviewing topics, I utilize practice problem sets to test a students current understanding, and for incorrect answers, require written responses (1-3 sentences) describing why the right answer is correct, and also identifying the errors in the incorrect answers. To prove mastery of a topic, I will 'flip' the session and ask my students to now act as the tutor and 'teach' me the topic. This gives another opportunity for deeper reflection and understanding, as well as informing me whether or not my students have reached a true understanding of the topic of study.
I am excited to get tutoring through Wyzant! See you s
