Hello! I graduated from Appalachian State University in 2001 a BS in Mathematics Teaching, and am also National Board Certified in mathematics for grades 9-12. I have been teaching math in a public high school since 2001. From 2009-2011, I took a brief break from the classroom to coach and support other math teachers in their classrooms. While I enjoyed working with teachers, I quickly realized how much I missed working directly with students. I returned to the classroom in 2011 and have loved being back where I belong - working with students!
One of my passions is helping students who struggle with math develop confidence and feel successful and empowered as learners. I also enjoy working with advanced students and finding creative ways to challenge them and take their mathematical thinking to the next level. I have experience grading the AP Statistics College
Board Exam, and can share tips and strategies to help students be successful.
During my teaching career, I have taught in many different settings: a traditional face-to-face format, a hybrid format where some students joined via Zoom while others were face-to-face, and a totally virtual format. I even taught a night class for students who wanted to take AP Statistics in addition to their regular course load.
Additionally, I have years of experience tutoring students 1:1 and in small groups, in both face-to-face and online settings. I have also led online courses in Geometry and Statistics for teachers.
My tutoring style is upbeat, encouraging, and student-centered. I believe that every student can learn math. I start by listening to how a student is thinking about a concept, then I build on what they already know and help them make connections to new ideas. My students report that I make math fun and easier to understand. My goal is for students to leave each session not only knowing more math, but also feeling more confident in their ability to learn it. I can tutor Prealgebra, Algebra 1/Math 1, Geometry/Math 2, Algebra 2/Math 3, and AP Statistics.
