I am a biology professor at a small town university. I have undergraduate, Master's and Doctorate degrees in Biology. I have over 20 years experience teaching general biology, anatomy and physiology, immunology, ecology, animal behavior, microbiology, zoology, herpetology, research in biology (defensive venom expenditure by rattlesnakes, etc.) and other life science courses at the college level. I also taught biology for a number of years at the high school level. Growing up, I spent many years helping students in the private church schools, including substitute teaching for grades 1 to 3 for a semester. For the past 15+ years, most of my tutoring has been to help students in the courses I mentioned previously. I also have a love of mathematics, chemistry and related courses.
I believe in working with the student, emphasizing the synergy that comes from working together to achieve the goal. It is important to learn why tutoring is being sought (i.e., the scope, requirements, etc., about that course so that I can tailor the tutoring to address those concerns). I like to review the student's study methods and strengths so as to find the approach that best works with his or her strengths. I make it a point to explain processes in as straight forward and clear a method as possible, and help the student find ways to associate important facts in a way that is easiest for that student. Additionally, the process needs to be a positive experience -- we achieve so much more when we face a challenge with confidence and a positive outlook. To that end, I like to incorporate a mixture of a little humor and an emphasis on time management that will give the student the best bang-for-the-buck in terms of study time, and the best chance to excel! If you have any questions, please reach out to me and I will be happy help.
