About Ben

Bio

I've been a college professor, an assessment specialist, a consultant, a CTO for a global nonprofit operating in five countries, and a startup entrepreneur. I am still a consultant, and I run a multimedia animation studio in Sparta, NC, as well as teach classes at the local community college. I'm learning every day.

I am still a consultant, and I run a multimedia animation studio in Sparta, NC, as well as teach classes at the local community college. I'm learning every day.
I believe that we never stop learning. Also, we often learn best from constructive feedback about our mistakes. In my experience as a learning systems designer and developer, I've found that different techniques work better for different subject areas. I try to use a project-based approach to learning, either collaborative or individual, in as many of my classes as I can.
Fun fact(s): I’m a gardener, a writer, and a professional photographer.
I look forward to teaching, learning, and building with you!

I have a Ph.D. in the social sciences, and I've spent over two decades studying people.

I've held a variety of roles in academic, corporate, and nonprofit sectors, as a worker and executive. I've also spent countless hours developing corporate training and job skills acquisition materials and programs in a variety of industry sectors.

I've been a photographer since the age of 13. I was classically trained at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and I specialize in natural light macro, landscape, and portraiture photography.

Having been steeped in a liberal arts education with a core humanities curriculum, as well as a scholar of complex systems, including Ph.D. level understanding and expertise of how humans learn and behave in the world, I am well poised to interpret individual and collective human behavior throughout the history of our existence, especially from an holistic perspective that contextualizes the reasons for these behaviors (and how they may or may not have been recorded) across a variety of phenomena.

I'm excited to discuss your tutoring needs and see if we will be able to work together to achieve your learning goals!

Benjamin Erlandson, Ph.D. is a photographer and multimedia creator, shooting for more than thirty years and creating motion-based works for nearly as long, first experiencing stop-motion animation at a summer camp during middle school. Ben has degrees from UNC-Asheville, Emerson College, and Arizona State University. His latest collaborative stop motion animated short film Monster News Feed has been featured and awarded in several film festivals, including Best Experimental Film at Frostbite International Indie Fest. Ben’s nature photography has been featured in solo and juried shows and published in journals such as Burningword Literary, The Esthetic Apostle, Camas, Reservoir Road, and Reed Magazine. In 2020, one of his photos was selected as the inaugural Conservation Award winner by the Appalachian Mountain Club. A relatively new exploration and practice, his environmental modeling and portraiture photography has been consistently published and exhibited internationally since October 2020. One of his works was recently invited as a juried selection in the Valdosta National 2022 exhibition. Having lived and worked in Asheville, Boston, Tempe, Monterey Bay, Berkeley, and Washington, DC, Ben currently resides in the quiet mountains of Glade Valley, North Carolina. Whenever the opportunity arises, he travels the world, always taking as many cameras as he can fit into his bag.
