I graduated with honors in Electrical Engineering from NC State University and built a successful career managing technology at a Fortune 100 company. My high SAT scores opened doors at NC State to both the Math and Science Honors and English Honors Programs. After early retirement, I followed my passion for teaching and earned my High School Math Certification. My first teaching experience was an SAT prep class, and from there I transitioned into private tutoring for the SAT and ACT—a journey that’s spanned over 22 years.

In that time, I’ve helped over 1000 students improve their SAT or ACT performance and gain acceptance to more than 170 colleges, including Ivy League schools, MIT, Stanford, and other prestigious universities. Several of my former students have gone on to become physicians. Parents regularly express their gratitude for my role in their children’s success.

I specialize in both the math and verbal sections of the SAT and ACT, with a focus on making difficult concepts—like polynomial equations or grammar rules—easy to understand. I’ve already tutored dozens of students for the new digital SAT, which debuted in March 2024, and I’m preparing for the updated ACT format coming in 2025.

In my tutoring sessions, I use official SAT or ACT exams, assign homework, and review any missed questions in detail during our next meeting. When necessary, I teach mini-lessons on topics that may need reinforcement. I’ve found that many students struggle with grammar and punctuation even if they excel in English classes—these are critical skills for success on standardized tests.

ACT English

ACT English

The four ACT sections each requires a different technique for efficiency and accuracy. For English, most students need considerable help improving their grasp of English grammar and punctuation. Also, I teach students how to identify the unique types of questions they'll encounter, and that greatly improves success.
ACT Math

ACT Math

I've tutored essentially all the high school math classes over 20 years, but my ACT Math tutoring is effective due to my ability to explain all the ACT math concepts–there are many. Several recent students improved by 5 points after we worked through multiple practice tests. I'll be closely monitoring the roll-out of the new ACT for 2025 and will be prepared to help students decide between the ACT and SAT.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

In contrast to the English and Science sections, ACT Reading requires getting an overall appreciation for a lengthy passage as well as answering detailed questions. Students learn to use their short-term memory together with skills for looking back to find details.
ACT Science

ACT Science

I've tutored for ACT Science for over 20 years. I show students how to approach the Science section as reading comprehension of science-related material. With rare exception, everything needed to answer each question is on the page. My method greatly improves the ability to finish on time.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I've tutored all the high school math courses. Students tell me I explain math concepts better than most of their teachers. If one explanation doesn't clarify the question, I can explain in another way. I help students learn, and remember, math concepts rather than just memorizing formulas.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is the primary basis for SAT and ACT Math, where I spend most of my tutoring time. So, most every tutoring day, I'm explaining algebra concepts to students. I focus on methods the student will remember, rather than memorizing formulas.
Geometry

Geometry

The skills of Geometry and Algebra are required for going on into the higher math topics of PreCalculus and Calculus. Typical geometry concepts include congruence, transformations, similarity, areas , volumes, trig ratios, circles, and other conic sections including ellipses, hyperbolas and parabolas. Depending on the school system, geometry and algebra are either integrated into courses like Math 1, Math 2, and Math 3, or are taught as separate courses. I’ve helped students with courses of both types over the years.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I’ve tutored many students in pre-calculus over the last 20 years. Compared with algebra, pre-calculus can be challenging – polynomials, exponents, equations of circles, ellipses, hyperbolas, trig functions, just to name a few. And now an AP Pre-calc class raises the level of difficulty a notch. But, I’ve learned to explain complex math concepts in ways students can understand. Keeping students from falling behind in their understanding in the class is very important.
SAT Math

SAT Math

The new adaptive SAT math section brings a new approach to math assessment. The new test has many easy questions, but also a smaller number of much more difficult questions dealing with quadratic and exponential equations. I tailor my tutoring to the individual student, with more attention to the high difficulty topics for those aiming for near perfect scores.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

The new Digital SAT combines the previous test's Reading and its Writing and Language sections into one verbal section. By taking my students through several of these tests, I acquaint them with the eight question types that occur in a predictable order in the new test. So, students have the confidence of knowing how to approach each question type. Grammar and punctuation skills continue to be important, and most students need help with these.
