I graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor's degree in English, Secondary Education, and a minor in Music. I'm currently enrolled in a Master's program in Literature through East Carolina University. My first experience tutoring a student in English actually occurred when I was still in High School. Thanks to a particularly dedicated ESL teacher, I was given the opportunity to spend my summer working Elementary aged students who, while they could speak English, were still catching up in the classroom as they adapted to their recent immigration to the United States. The joy I felt working with those students that summer put me on the path to become an educator.

Since obtaining my degree, I've worked as both a middle and high school English teacher for a total of ten years of teaching experience, though I really found my niche teaching Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, which I have taught for the past four years. I also participate in the AP test reading each year, which has given me great insights into the specifics of the AP Literature test's essay section. While my primary experience is with classes of 15-30 students, I also offer after school tutoring sessions, and usually work 1-2 days after school each week with smaller groups of 1-5.

I am a proponent of research backed, evidence based teaching practices, especially the gradual release model (teacher modeling - collaborative practice - independent practice), and Socratic questioning. I consider myself a lifelong learner, and frequently participate in ongoing professional development to ensure that I am always following the most promising research in pedagogical techniques.

I am available for tutoring in any English-related subject, though my particular specialization is most applicable to High School students, especially those who are in advanced classes and find themselves in need of that extra reinforcement to achieve their potential. Feel free to contact me with questions or to schedule a lesson!
