Throughout college, I tutored many students in professional writing and gave resume and editing help. More recently, however, I was employed by the North Carolina State University as a Graduate Teaching Assistant who ran my own classes in Communication for Engineering and Technology, an advanced level technical writing course.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have been employed as a technical writer during the course of my education, but have come to realize how much I enjoy helping students to reach their max potential, later focusing my research on how to best help learners learn in remote environments.
My qualifications include a degree with honors in English from Penn State, a top program nationally, and more recently being employed to teach technical writing at NC State, the university where I received my masters degree. Through my years studying English, I have developed strategies to help digest tough readings, comprehend critical theory, as well as write confidently and with elegance on any topic, both academic and professional.
For me, I always feel that the most beneficial way to help someone with their writing is to acknowledge a starting point. Not everyone is a strong writer, so we should not pretend like they are. In order to help them learn and not develop a strong dislike for writing, it is important to acknowledge areas where there are more concrete rules that are easier to get ones head around, such as removing ambiguities such as "this" to ensure they can translate a message, without getting so hung up on advanced grammar and things that cause stress. (I am a big fan of basic checklists for novice students in any type of writing) At the end of the day, I believe we should be preparing students with skills that anyone needs in writing, and unless my student wants to enter academia, this can help them learn the most. (unless the student comes to me in hopes of learning these things)
Please feel free to message me to set up a tutoring session!
